Law professors file ethics complaint against Kellyanne Conway, seek sanction

A group of law professors have sent a letter to the Office of Disciplinary Council at the D.C. Court of Appeals calling for sanctions against White House counselor Kellyanne Conway. “It is professional misconduct for a lawyer to [e]ngage in conduct involving dishonesty, fraud, deceit, or misrepresentation,” the letter states.

According to New York Daily News:

The letter cites several examples of Conway’s alleged misconduct, including the White House counselor’s infamous inaccurate claim that a “Bowling Green Massacre” occurred (there is no such thing), her use of “alternative facts” to back up other inaccurate statements put out by the White House, and endorsing Ivanka Trump-brand fashion products.

The disciplinary complaint, which was signed by 15 law professors, including Susan Brooks of Drexel University, Lawrence Fox of Yale Law School, and Michael Tigar of American University and Duke University, ends with this:

“If Ms. Conway were not a lawyer and was “only” engaging in politics, there would be few limits on her conduct outside of the political process itself. She could say and do what she wished and still call herself a politician. But she is a lawyer. And her conduct, clearly intentionally violative of the rules that regulate her professional status, cries out for sanctioning by the DC Bar.”

Saudi King brings 506 tons of luggage on 9-day trip

There’s carry-on and checked baggage, but what do you call luggage that weighs 506 tons, including two Mercedes limousines and two elevators? It’s just a nine-day trip to Indonesia, but Saudi Arabia’s King Salman bin Abdul Aziz isn’t leaving any of his creature comforts behind.

According to the Washington Post:

The Saudi royal is expected to bring 459 metric tonnes (506 U.S. tons) of cargo with him on his trip — including two Mercedes-Benz s600 limousines and two electric elevators… The Jakarta Post reports that the Saudi group will total about 1,500 people, including 10 ministers, 25 princes and at least 100 security personnel.

But apparently this isn’t excessive, relatively speaking.

While the Saudi king’s colossal cargo hold may seem large, it is not necessarily out of scale with other world leaders. When President Barack Obama visited sub-Saharan Africa in 2013, he was accompanied by 56 support vehicles, including 14 limousines, and hundreds of U.S. Secret Service agents tasked with helping secure locations in Senegal, South Africa and Tanzania.

It’ll be the first time in 46 years that the King has traveled to Indonesia, and with that kind of packing checklist, it’s a wonder he travels at all.

The Body Orifice Security Scanner is why the rectally smuggled phone is called “Beat the BOSS”

When I saw that the cell phone designed for rectal smuggling was called “Beat the Boss,” I assumed “The Boss” was a synonym for “The Man,” but it turns out it’s a reference to a specific product: Xeku’s Body Orifice Security Scanner (BOSS), a “hygienic cavity search” chair that scans prisoners for rectal contraband.

Chicken Tikka Masala

My husband is British, and therefore incredibly picky about Indian food. He bemoans the lack of restaurants that serve “proper curries” in our neighborhood.

This is why, on our annual trek back to UK to visit his family over the holidays, we’ve started the tradition of going to an Indian restaurant on New Year’s Eve. We skip the champagne, the sparkles, and the countdown in favor of eating our fill of spicy curry.

In an effort to ensure that we’re not deprived of Indian food the rest of the year, I am learning how to cook more Indian dishes at home. I’m starting off with the quintessential British Indian dish: chicken tikka masala.

Since then, thousands of 300 million-year-old fossilized “Tully Monsters” have turned up and the creature was officially named as the Illinois state fossil.

This is probably the Samsung Galaxy S8

s8 Samsung is set to announce the Galaxy S8 smartphone in late March, but the two videos and a couple images embedded here appear to show working units. The videos show the phone’s refined design. The curved screen of the S7 remains as does the 3.5mm headphone port. The phone looks very similar to its predecessor though it’s missing the physical and capacitive buttons found on… Read More

Concrete buffer snaps, goes loco, terrorizes its former masters

It’s the narration of two gentlemen (Spencer Laboda and his father) who record and comment upon this incident in which a crew of construction workers improvise a series of tactics (some very unwise ones included!) to recapture, a spinning, potentially lethal concrete polisher on a jobsite that really makes this work. Laboda notes, “nobody was injured… we bought lunch for some of the participants. This was a great construction crew and they built a magnificent facility for us to enjoy every day.” (via Wil Wheaton)

Twitter can't get enough of Dev Patel and Andrew Garfield's bromance at the Oscars

TwitterFacebook

We have very bad news for Ryan Reynolds.

It looks like Andrew Garfield has a new bromance, just weeks after the two made out upon losing the Golden Globes’ Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy to Ryan Gosling.

At the Academy Awards ceremony, Garfield was pictured in a very warm embrace with Lion star and fellow Oscar nominee Dev Patel.

Many people on Twitter couldn’t cope with the cuteness and openly asked for the two actors to kiss:

1) let andrew garfield kiss another man at this award show
2) let it be dev patel

Stop throwing coins into ponds, this sea turtle ate a whole bunch and needs surgery

TwitterFacebook

Years of eating coins dropped at the bottom of a pond has rendered a sea turtle in pain, and headed to the surgery ward.

The 25-year-old Thai sea turtle was discovered living in a pond in Si Racha, a town on the east coast of Thailand, according to the Bangkok Post

Vets conducted a CT scan and discovered a lump of coins measuring an alarming 20 x 23 x 30 cm (7.8 x 9 x 11 in.) in the turtle’s body, pressing down on its ventral shell (or the turtle’s belly), causing it to be cracked, swollen and infected. Scans also showed a fish hook in her intestine.  Read more…

Adele and Emma Stone are BFFs since at least 2015, when they were pictured having dinner together with Jennifer Lawrence in New York.

I can't believe how much I love this Samsung stylus that looks like a Staedtler pencil

TwitterFacebook

I never thought I’d say this in a million years, but Samsung made a stylus I actually want.

Alongside announcements for its new Galaxy Tab S3 and Galaxy Book tablets that come with the most advanced S Pen Samsung’s ever made, the company surprised everyone with a special edition Staedtler-branded S Pen that resembles the iconic black and yellow pencil.

Pencil-like design aside, the Staedtler S Pen works almost exactly like the S Pen that comes included with the new tablets. Hover the 0.7mm tip near the screen and the familiar Samsung Air Command bubble will pop up with a variety of features like Smart Select, Translate and Magnify. Read more…

China's capital is replacing tens of thousands of taxis with electric cars to fight pollution

TwitterFacebook

China’s capital city is doing something huge about its perennial pollution issue.

Almost 70,000 petrol powered taxis in Beijing will gradually be replaced with electric vehicles, and any new taxis on the road must be electric, according to a report by the National Business Daily.

The project to replace all the current petrol powered cars is estimated to cost taxi operators $1.3 billion (9 billion yuan).

Some 67,000 of Beijing’s 71,000 taxis currently run on petrol.

A conventional car is estimated to cost around $10,000, with an electric vehicle double that amount, at $20,000. Read more…

Sony's Xperia XZ Premium is the world's first phone with a 4K HDR screen

TwitterFacebook

The word overkill doesn’t seem to be in Sony’s vocabulary.

A year and a half after introducing the Xperia Z5 Premium, the world’s first and only smartphone with a 4K display, Sony’s now one-upped itself with the Xperia XZ Premium, the world’s first phone with a 4K HDR screen.

The display’s not the only thing that’s bonkers on the Xperia XZ Premium. The phone’s camera is also the world’s first to be capable of recording slow motion video at a ridiculous 960 frames per second.

By “normal” standards, the Xperia XZ Premium’s 5.5-inch 4K (3,840 x 2,160) HDR screen is totally unnecessary, but I guess when you’re Sony and you have so little of the mobile pie, you’ve got to aim for the stratosphere or throw in the towel. Read more…

A traditional Japanese painting of Iron Man will look perfect in your grown up apartment

Japanese artist Ikuyoan drew Iron Man using thick, dark lines of ink to frame the superhero.

You can watch Ikuyoan’s process as he draws Iron Man in a more modern, conventional form:

HP embraces 'lapability' with new Pro x2 detachable PC

TwitterFacebook

It’s been four years since Microsoft introduced its first Surface tablet and at least two since they coined the term “lapability,” which is another way of saying, “This device is really comfortable on your lap.”

In that time, Windows system manufacturers have slowly but surely adopted Microsoft’s strategy of stuffing full-blown Windows PCs into tablets that can marry with keyboards and turn into lap-friendly ultra-portable devices. In general, Microsoft’s designs for the Surface Pro 3 and 4 have been the range’s apex, and most partners have offered only pale imitations. Read more…

India's Paytm hits 200 million mobile wallet users

TwitterFacebook

In a country where cash is still king, a mobile app that offers online transactions is seeing 700,000 new users join the platform each day.

India’s Paytm has hit 200 million wallet users, CEO Vijay Shekhar Sharma said Monday.

With this milestone reached, Sharma is also setting his company a new goal to get half a billion Indians to do online transactions using his app in the next four years.

Even though the six-year-old mobile wallet app has been fairly popular among urban Indians for years, it wasn’t until November last year when prime minister Narendra Modi declared the vast majority of cash invalid in the country that its relevance skyrocketed. Read more…

We don’t need more Surface clones

img_0046 When Microsoft launched the Surface line back in 2012, its combination of a tablet and keyboard cover (married with a smart kickstand), was innovative. Justin Timberlake and Ryan Gosling recreated their 'Mickey Mouse Club' days at the Oscars

It’s a big Oscars night for both Ryan Gosling and Justin Timberlake.

Gosling’s nominated for Best Actor for his role in La La Land. Meanwhile Timberlake’s been running around all night promoting that song from Trolls and photobombing his wife.

So, considering the pair’s shared history, it’s cool these two had a chance to catch up during Sunday’s show. They go way back— both Timberlake and Gosling were stars on The Mickey Mouse Club in the ’90s.

The Oscars red carpet was its own live action 'Beauty and the Beast'

It’s a tale as old as time…Hollywood takes something that was already pretty popular and decides to do it again and again until it’s everywhere you look.

This year, it’s Beauty and the Beast, which you probably know is getting the live action treatment starring Emma Watson unless you’ve been imprisoned in a weird castle where dishes come to life for the past few months. The stars seem to have taken the hint.

Iranian film 'The Salesman' wins Oscar in biggest political statement of the night

TwitterFacebook

Director Asghar Farhadi’s absence at the Oscars on Sunday spoke almost as loudly as the award itself.

The Iranian filmmaker, who won his second Oscar for The Salesman, did not accept the award in person because he and other members of the film’s cast boycotted the awards following President Donald Trump’s travel ban.

It’s a great honor to be receiving this valuable award for a second time,” Iranian-American engineer Anousheh Ansari said reading a statement from Farhadi on stage. “I’m sorry I’m not with you tonight, my absence is out of respect for the people of my country and those of the other six nations who have been disrespected by the inhumane law that bans entry of immigrants to the U.S.” Read more…

Nicole Kidman is a great actress and a terrible clapper and that is okay

TwitterFacebook

Important Oscars update: Nicole Kidman claps weird.

Clapping, of course, is a joining of the hands with fluctuating levels of force as a sign of glee or respect. It’s hard to do weird, but Nicole Kidman is managing it quite well.

Look, we know this is a strange thing to call out — it’s petty. To be honest with you, we’ve held off quite a bit but we just can’t remain silent any more: Nicole Kidman claps in an unorthodox way.

Could celebrities be… not just like us?

Take a look at Kidman’s clapping below.

5 years later, celebrities put their hoodies up for Trayvon Martin

TwitterFacebook

On Feb. 26, 2012, an unarmed teenager carrying iced tea and candy was shot and killed on a Florida street.

His name was Trayvon Martin, and five years on, the movement inspired by his death lives on. Left for dead by a Neighborhood Watch volunteer, the fate of Sybrina Fulton and Tracy Martin’s son fanned the flames that became the Black Live Matter movement.

An image of Martin dressed in a hoodie was seared on the American conscience, and the act of “putting your hoodie up” became a protest against a culture that makes instant criminals of black boys. Read more…

'The Walking Dead' recap: Negan's having some personnel issues

TwitterFacebook

This recap contains spoilers for The Walking Dead Season 7, episode 11, titled “Hostiles and Calamities.”

If you thought the La La Land soundtrack was full of earworms, you’d probably forgotten all about “Easy Street,” huh?

Luckily, if the Oscars aren’t your bag, The Walking Dead is here to offer you a pickle-eating, doctor-burning alternative to Hollywood’s most glamorous night, and you can rest assured that no one’s going to be winning any prizes in Negan’s world any time soon.

After one solid episode and one legitimately good one, the show took two steps back with episode 711, “Hostiles and Calamities” — although for an installment focused on the show’s most consistently irritating character, I guess it’s remarkable that the hour wasn’t as calamitous as it could’ve been.  Read more…
