The best moments of the 2020 ‘Pandemmys’

The best moments of the 2020 'Pandemmys'

The virtual 2020 Emmys, or “Pandemmys” as we may or may not call them, took place Sunday night and proceeded with surprisingly few technical glitches and some generally pleasant surprises. We loved sneaking a peek at celebrity homes and makeshift Emmy parties, and seeing TV’s top players in the same situation as those watching at home was oddly comforting as we all celebrated television together.

In a normal year we round up the best and worst moments of the Emmys, but since this year is far from normal, we decided to just focus on the highlights (although that fake audience bit from the beginning… we could have done without). Here are our favorite moments from the 2020 Emmy Awards. Read more…

Chadwick Boseman tribute will air Sunday night on ABC after ‘Black Panther’

Chadwick Boseman tribute will air Sunday night on ABC after 'Black Panther'

Mourning together isn’t easy in these socially distant times, but Chadwick Boseman fans will have a chance to do that on Sunday night.

Marvel’s Black Panther is set to air commercial-free on ABC at 8:00 p.m. ET on Sunday, Aug. 30. Then, immediately after the movie, ABC News will deliver a 40-minute special tribute, titled Chadwick Boseman – A Tribute for a King.

Boseman died on Friday at the age of 42 after a four-year struggle with colon cancer. The news of his death came as a shock to fans, as the Black Panther star had opted to keep his diagnosis and subsequent treatments a secret.

The Sunday evening special will, according to ABC, “celebrate Boseman’s storied life, legacy and career, and the cultural imprint he made on- and off-screen.” The network doesn’t name any participants, but the announcement promises to feature tributes from “celebrities, political figures, and fans across the world,” as well as “special words” from friends and co-stars. Allow Bryan Cranston to show you his hats in this mildly unhinged Jimmy Fallon song

Allow Bryan Cranston to show you his hats in this mildly unhinged Jimmy Fallon song

Bryan Cranston. Is a man. Of many hats.

Sure, we all know the Heisenberg pork pie chapeau (and it makes an appearance here). But before this mildly unhinged Fallon segment who knew Cranston could rock a sailor’s cap, a little red bonnet, or a sweeping fuchsia fascinator while on the toilet with such dead-eyed, menacing panache? Truly, he has the range, and I am just crazed enough after months in my house that it feels like the funniest thing I’ve seen all week.

I desperately want to have been in the Zoom pitch meeting where some exhausted writer went “He wore that hat in Breaking Bad, right? Can we write a weird banger and just stick him and Jimmy in a bunch of random crap from the hat closet then cut it together like a TikTok ripoff?” Read more…

Wilford Brimley, beloved entertainer and star of 'Cocoon,' is dead 85

Wilford Brimley, whose work as an actor and as a spokesperson for the American Diabetes Association made him a transgenerational favorite, is dead at 85.

Brimley died on Saturday morning, his manager Lynda Bensky confirmed to Mashable. He was in intensive care at the time, receiving dialysis treatments and dealing with unspecified medical problems. He is survived by his wife Beverly and his four children.

“Wilford Brimley was a man you could trust,” Bensky said in a statement. “He said what he meant and he meant what he said. He had a tough exterior and a tender heart. I’m sad that I will no longer get to hear my friend’s wonderful stories. He was one of a kind.” Read more…

Cameo now lets you pay to Zoom with celebrities, including Tony Hawk, Lance Bass, and Sean Astin

Cameo introduced a new feature on Sunday — Zoom calls. The celebrity shoutout service will now let you book a 10-minute live video interview with various big names, so you can directly ask Sinbad about the Shazaam movie you’re positive exists. It’s like a pop culture convention’s meet and greet, only without the germs.

So far, Cameo lists dozens of personalities as available for a live chat, including beloved actor Sean Astin, iconic skateboarder Tony Hawk, N*SYNC alumni Lance Bass, comedian Gilbert Gottfried, and original Green Power Ranger Jason David Frank. Scott Patterson, aka Luke from Gilmore Girls, is also available, so you can ask Stars Hollow’s grumpy coffee dealer how much caffeine the show’s cast actually consumed. Read more…

Justin Bieber makes James Corden reveal how much he regrets being in ‘Cats’

Justin Bieber makes James Corden reveal how much he regrets being in 'Cats'

Give Justin Bieber a Pulitzer for this, the most hard-hitting interview of the year so far.

During the regular Late Late Show truth-or-icky-dare segment “Spill Your Guts Or Fill Your Guts” Bieber (or at least the producer who handed him the card) hit host James Corden with a tough question: on a scale of one to 10, how much does he regret doing Cats?

As always, it’s hard to know whether this question is genuinely a surprise to Corden, but he thinks about it hard, briefly considers opting to eat some cod sperm instead, then answers, it seems, truthfully. The number he gives is diplomatic, but his grimacing, umm-ing and aah-ing tells the real story.  Read more…

Meghan Markle’s husband speaks out about royal family split, kindly asks everyone to step off

Meghan Markle's husband speaks out about royal family split, kindly asks everyone to step off

“Harxit” may not really roll off the tongue the way “Megxit” does — but Prince Harry would like to make it clear that the decision to bail on being royalty was actually his, thank you very much.

After weeks of royal family drama and years of appalling treatment by the British press, Queen Elizabeth II confirmed, firmly, that her grandson and his wife would be stepping down from their official roles and ceremonial duties as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, with her blessing. The couple will be seeking financial independence, and splitting their time between the U.K. and North America.

Now, Harry has made his first public comments about the official split with his royal family at an event for a charity he co-founded, Sentebale, which works with children in HIV-affected communities in Lesotho and Botswana. Read more…

Kristen Bell sings 17 different Disney songs in 5 minutes —including ‘Let It Go’

Holy clearance, Mickey! Who needs Disney+ when you have Frozen 2 star Kristen Bell (and also Jimmy Fallon) singing the best 17 seconds from 17 classic Disney songs?

Their takes on the overwrought duets of the 90s (and Fallon’s Elton John impression) rivals the ones you do alone in your car; and Bell’s “What do you call ’em? Oh, feet, duh” has me wishing they’d remake a bunch of Disney movies with dorky thirtysomething comediennes playing all the princesses.

I don’t care whether you’re ‘Part Of Your World’ years old or ‘Let It Go’ years old — we were all kids once, and there’s a goosebumps moment in here for you.  Read more…

Justin Trudeau apologizes for wearing brownface in old yearbook photo, calls it racist

TwitterFacebook

Not for the first time this year, a politician has apologized for a racist photo discovered in an old yearbook.

This time it’s Justin Trudeau, the Canadian prime minister who rose to social media fame due to his quirky sock choices, youth, and charm, but whose popularity has dimmed due to recent corruption charges and other past blunders coming to light.

As first reported by Time, Trudeau darkened his face with makeup for an Aladdin costume he wore to an “Arabian Nights” party at a ritzy private school he taught at in 2001, when he was 29.

A picture of his costume, which included a feathered turban and robe, is featured in the 2000-2001 yearbook of West Point Grey Academy.  Read more…

‘Game of Thrones’ finale defended by ‘Seinfeld’ star Jason Alexander

TwitterFacebook

Game of Thrones is done and dusted, wrapping up its polarising eighth and final season with an equally debated finale.

While many have criticised the final episode of the beloved HBO series, there are some who have jumped to defend it.

And if anyone knows a thing or two about polarising TV series finales, it’s the Seinfeld cast.

Star of the legendary sitcom Jason Alexander, better known as your ol’ pal George “Can’t-Stand-Ya” Constanza, has offered up kind words for the Game of Thrones crew on Twitter.

“I know a little something about finales and disappointed fans,” he wrote on Tuesday.

“My advice: live in joy that you are part of something that moves people so. You were all magnificent. My family and I loved it all. Thanks.” Read more…

‘Queer Eye’ gives Guillermo a makeover on Jimmy Kimmel, and it’s not just comedy

TwitterFacebook

Queer Eye is back, with Season 3 ready to mist up your eyes on Netflix.

So, Jimmy Kimmel invited four of the Fab Five, Antoni, Karamo, Tan, and Jonathan, to weave their magic for the late show host’s longtime sidekick, Guillermo.

Let’s start with that “bold t-shirt choice,” a portrait of a chihuahua mean to make you “bark for your confidence,” and a strong (very strong) Tequila Sunrise recipe.

It’s a genuinely heartwarming segment, due to the Fab Five’s signature respect for all of their subjects, even if it’s for a comedy show. Read more…

‘Final Destination’ star Devon Sawa boards flight on the film’s anniversary. Seriously.

19 years ago, Devon Sawa avoided an ill-fated flight in the now-cult film Final Destination.

Almost two decades to the date, the actor tweeted on Sunday that he’d just boarded a plane with the flight number 317. On March 17. 3/17. Oh no.

That’s right folks. The actor at the centre of Final Destination, a film released on March 16, 2000 and whose entire premise of cheating death hinges on a premonition about a plane, said he boarded a flight on the film’s anniversary which matched the flight number to the date.  Read more…

Taylor Swift used facial recognition at a concert to detect stalkers

TwitterFacebook

While facial recognition is increasingly being used by authorities to keep track of wrongdoers, entertainers have employed the tech as well – to keep track of stalkers.

As per Rolling Stone, at Taylor Swift’s Rose Bowl concert in May, a kiosk was set up where it was playing clips of the pop star’s rehearsal.

Little did concertgoers know was that a camera was hiding behind the kiosk’s screen, where a facial recognition camera was snapping photos and transferring them to a Nashville-based “command post.”

The images were then checked with a database of the singer’s known list of stalkers, which numbers in the hundreds. Read more…

Tiffany Haddish and Jimmy Fallon throw down ’90s bangers in a Lip Sync Battle

TwitterFacebook

Ready for the fastest feet you’ve seen today?

For the latest instalment of his wildly popular “Lip Sync Battle” segment, Fallon invited Saturday Night Live favourite Tiffany Haddish into the arena.

Both kicked off with some solid ’90s nostalgia. Fallon shimmied through Deee-Lite’s 1990 banger “Groove Is in the Heart,” but Haddish absolutely nailed the Lady of Rage’s 1994 track “Afro Puffs.”

The late show host picked Post Malone’s “Psycho,” which seemed to slow the pace, but Fallon picked it up with a few of the rapper’s signature face tattoos. But Haddish went old school for James Brown’s “Get Up (I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine” with some highly fancy footwork. Read more…

Jimmy Kimmel finally responds to Trump’s bizarre rally rant — with a fact check

TwitterFacebook

Jimmy Kimmel has been pretty quiet about Donald Trump’s recent vendetta against late night show hosts.

During a rally for South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster, Trump called Stephen Colbert a “low life,” Jimmy Fallon a “lost soul,” and Kimmel “terrible.” But unlike Colbert and Fallon, Kimmel had yet to respond.

Now we know why — he was off-grid, on summer vacation with his family in the Bob Marshall Wilderness, Montana with no service. But Kimmel finally responded to Trump on Monday night, with a big ol’ fact check.

During the rally speech, Trump told a longwinded story about his experience on Jimmy Kimmel Live! pre-election, that included a claim that the late show host reverently waited out on Hollywood Boulevard for Trump, and apparently visited him in his dressing room before the show. Read more…

One Harvey Weinstein accuser says she won’t celebrate his arrest in a must-read thread

TwitterFacebook

In the days following Harvey Weinstein’s arrest, some within the entertainment industry have posted a statement released by Time’s Up — the organization created in the wake of the scandal.

Others, like actress Annabella Sciorra, have taken things a step further. Sciorra was one of the women to come forward in Ronan Farrow’s follow up stories featured in The New Yorker. On Sunday, she shared that she felt the farthest thing from celebratory when she heard the initial news about his arrest.

Elon Musk says story about fired assistant is 'total nonsense'

TwitterFacebook

In the last couple of days, a story lifted from Ashlee Vance’s biography of Elon Musk has been making the rounds on the internet, claiming that Musk fired his assistant of 12 years when she wanted a raise.

The story portrays Musk as an unusually cruel (or extremely efficient, depending on your perspective) leader, but now Musk himself has taken to Twitter to explain that the story isn’t true.

The anecdote, originally published in Vance’s book Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future, goes like this. Mary Beth Brown asked for a significant raise after having worked as Musk’s assistant for 12 years. Musk responded by asking Brown to take two weeks’ leave to see whether she’s really indispensable to him. After he’d realized she’s not, he promptly fired her.  Read more…
