Indonesia wanted to block WhatsApp because people are sending ‘obscene GIFs’

TwitterFacebook

WhatsApp appears to be the latest social media platform to run afoul of Indonesia’s censorship rules.

The populous Southeast Asian nation on Monday vowed to block WhatsApp within 48 hours, if it did not ensure that “obscene” GIFs were removed from the platform.

Indonesia later dropped its threat after Tenor, WhatsApp’s third party GIF provider, appeared to have fixed the issue.

“We see now that they have done what we asked. Therefore we won’t block them,” the director general from Indonesia’s communication and informatics ministry, Semuel Pangerapan told Reuters on Tuesday. Read more…

Amazing looping GIFs of waves

The image you see here is a still frame from a splendid cinemagraph—a seamlessly-looping short video or GIF—that does not do the original justice. Atlas Obscura’s Anika Burgess writes on the strange majesty of Ray Collins and Armand Dijcks’ cinemgraphs of waves, where the captured natural beauty becomes weird, even threatening, in the eternally-recurring moment.

“The idea was to stretch out the 1/8000th [of a] second during which the image was created into infinity. In a lot of my work, I like to mess with people’s minds a little, and this contrast between a very short time span being stretched infinitely long, and between motion and stillness is a perfect example of that.”

This man makes amazing surreal animations from famous artwork

TwitterFacebook

Famous pieces of artwork are fun to look at, but it turns out they’re even more fun to animate.

Kajetan Obarski (a.k.aKiszkiloszki) is an Amsterdam-based animator who specialises in turning artistic masterpieces into spectacularly surreal short animations.

“I just collect objects, paintings, pictures from the public domain and then I create animations,” Obarski said. “I do my own photos and my own digital works for animations too.”

As you can see, the results are glorious:

Although Obarski began playing with animation software around 10 years ago, he only started putting his creations online last year. Read more…

Wikileaks' CIA dump contained WAY more bad memes than you would think

TwitterFacebook

Wikileaks dumped a huge cache of CIA documents and files this morning in the first of a series of Vault 7 leaks, and in doing so, showed the world the agency’s horrible taste in memes.

The whole leak, codenamed “Year Zero,” can be viewed via torrent download. When you check out all the files on your PC, you’ll find more than just zipped documents and PDFs. There’s a whole array of .gifs and .jpgs too — and most of them are memes. Old, lame memes, for the most part.

Here’s a quick look at some of the memes that came along with the dump. You’ll see they include everything from Boromir’s “One does not simply…” warning to a pipe-smoking baby.  Read more…
