Why TO-DO Lists Are Bad For Time Management And What To Do Instead

Being able to manage our time effectively is without a doubt one of the best “superpowers” we can possess. In fact, according to a recent study by IBM surveying over 2 million professionals, it was identified as the second most important skill to master in this new era of work.

Let’s be clear, time management is no easy task. However, I believe the main problem behind our poor relationship with it is our inability to look at it more holistically. We often consider it as a linear and isolated variable and, when in fact, there are at least two other factors profoundly impacting it the way we manage it: ourselves and unpredictability.

As we’ve all had the chance to experience directly, our mental and emotional states decide whether we’ll succeed in our best intentions or fall short in them. Moreover, while we’d love life events to be always straightforward, the reality is most times they’re not. As a result, what’s needed to develop greater time management is mental and emotional agility. Curious to know what the number 1 skill in the IBM study was? Adaptability to change!

THE PROBLEM WITH TO-DOs

why to do lists dont work

One of the biggest misconceptions when it comes to time management is believing a TO-DO list will do the trick for us. Nothing further from the truth! The problem with TO-DO lists is they are not time-bound as we are not assigning defined deadlines for each task: a rather poor approach considering time is the one element we are trying to master. No wonder studies show how bad we are at estimating how long it will take us to complete our tasks.

The second problem with TO-DO lists is they don’t tackle one of the most important aspects of time management: prioritisation.

Prioritisation is an art and while there is no one size fits all, it’s a necessary condition for greater productivity. It turns out, prioritising, according to science, is one of the hardest activities for our brain to perform. Therefore, having clear methodologies to help us make the most of our time is a great asset to own.

You might be familiar with the Eisenhower matrix where the idea is to categorise tasks by their level of urgency and importance in a two by two matrix. This is to identify and tackle the ones that score highest in urgency and importance. While this may be a useful approach, the problem is it doesn’t consider our mental and emotional relationship with those tasks, which inevitably impact our ability to be effective.

What to do INSTEAD

Despite the many great hacks out there, the most important aspect to cultivate for greater time management is self-awareness. Taking the time to understand when you are most energised in your day, knowing what comes easy to you vs what comes hard, and knowing what kind of work requires a different type of thinking are necessary conditions to operate efficiently as a professional.

Once you are clear on these aspects, applying different hacks and techniques to boost your productivity can indeed become fruitful. One useful framework to always keep in mind when thinking about time management is to view it as a combination of task-management with emotional and mental self-management.

Taking your TO DO list to the next level with 4 powerful tips

reasons why to do lists dont work

  1. Focus on time boxing. This means putting a deadline for each task as that forces you to be more accountable and accurate. While it might be tricky at first, over time, you will become much better at your predictions.
  2. Master time boxing. According to science, you can achieve the best results by using sprints: each task should not be longer than 60 to 90 minutes. This is because our brain energy is finite, and to keep sustainable productivity levels throughout our day, we must give our brain a break of about 5 to 10 min in between tasks so that it can regain its power and focus.
  3. Reimagine prioritisation. When doing this activity, make sure you are in the equation too. What does this mean? Consider your current energy levels and how inspiring or demanding your upcoming activities are. By taking this holistic approach, you’ll ensure not only to be more effective but also smarter in the way you tackle your day as you will have the motivation and energy needed to power through. No point in doing all the most important and urgent activities first if by midday you have no energy left to think straight!
  4. Reverse engineer your TO-DO. While knowing the things you need to achieve in your day is important, having a TO DON’T LIST is equally powerful. As we live in a world of constant distraction and temptation, listing out all the things you need to avoid what hinders your productivity and well-being can go a long way.

Time management is an ever-evolving process that goes hand in hand with your evolution and personal growth. Keep experimenting and have fun with it. You’ll learn things about yourself you never thought you would!

10 Biggest Moving Mistakes You’ll Want To Avoid

Moving can be a stressful time because there is an overwhelming amount of things that need to be done. You have to find a new place, pack up all your things, haul them, put them in your new home, arrange utilities, and more. It’s easy to forget something, and mistakes can be very costly.

For the best moving tips, we are sharing with you the most common mistakes people make when moving from one home to another.

Not Getting Estimates

avoiding moving mistakes

Unless you’re doing all of the moving yourself, getting estimates is essential. You want to call up several different moving companies in your area well before your move date. Ask them about truck sizes, how much they charge by the hour, how many people they send, insurance, and mileage. Ask if you can get a quote in writing before comparing multiple quotes from the moving companies. This will help ensure you get the best rate possible for your move.

Not Making a Moving Checklist

Many people think they can simply remember everything they have to do before their big move. However, it’s easy to forget small things. For example, did you remember to call the utility companies and tell them your move date? Did you pick up enough packing supplies? Do you remember which moving company offered which quote? As hectic as moving it, it’s easy to let things slip through the cracks. This is where a moving checklist comes in. It’ll group things you should do by importance and date to make sure you remember everything.

Ignoring Moving Insurance

No one ever wants anything to go wrong in their move, and many people consider moving insurance an expense they don’t need. However, this is something important to have. What if the movers accidentally dropped your antique mirror? Maybe a piece of furniture or expensive electronics didn’t make it to your home unscathed. Whatever happens, moving insurance can help cover the cost to replace it. In turn, you won’t be out this money on top of everything else.

Not Taking Measurements

You may assume that all of your furniture will fit smoothly through your doorways or up the stairs in your new home, but this can be a huge mistake. You could end up paying to move items that simply won’t fit into your new home. Before you move, go to your new home and measure the doorways and stairs. Take your measurements back and measure your larger pieces of furniture. Do they fit? If not, you may have to sell them off before you move.

Putting Your Valuables in the Moving Truck

Did you know that many moving companies refuse to deal with valuable items like jewelry? If it gets lost in the move, you could be out these pieces. This is why you want to carefully pack your valuables, label them, and transport them yourself. Expensive technology, collectibles, or important documents should also go with you in your vehicle where you or a family member can keep a close eye on them. Read your moving contract and see if the company can move things like firearms, grills, or alcohol.

Forgetting to Prep for the Pets

If you’re just moving across town, this won’t be as big of an issue. However, if you’re moving hours away, you want to prep for your pet. Make sure all of your pet’s shots are updated. Get any certificates, copies of medical records, and paperwork you need for your new vet. Your pet should have the proper tags and identification with them, and you’ll have to plan how to transport them. Ask about motion sickness medications and portable kennels for the ride.

No Personal Survival Kit

Everyone in the family should have a small personal survival kit to ensure the move goes as smoothly as possible. It could include must-have items like a screwdriver, address book, map, flashlight, toiletries, can opener, dog food, any item your child can’t sleep without, coffee, soap, toilet paper, medications, and cash. This kit will get you through the first few hours of the move before you have a chance to unpack. It should go in the car with you and be ready to grab when you get to the house.

Failing to Switch Important Addresses

Credit card bureaus, insurance agencies, banks, fitness centers, utilities, and subscription-based services are entities you’ll have to contact to switch your address. Forward your mail at the post office. Talk to your primary care doctor and get referrals to a new clinic and arrange to have your records transferred over. Get veterinarian paperwork and school records together and make sure you change your voting address before the next election.

Not Leaving Time to Clean

You don’t want to neglect your current home in favor of your new one. You should set aside time to deep clean your old home and make any repairs necessary to get it ready for the next buyers or tenants. Get any deposits back and cancel any services you have like lawn care. Call your local utility company and give them your move date to transfer it over. You may have to pay off any bills at this time.

Not Labeling the Boxes

moving mistakes to avoid

You want to clearly label all of your moving boxes and organize them by room. This will remove a lot of the stress and guesswork that comes with unpacking. It’ll also help the movers put your boxes in the correct space in your new home. Label the room, what’s in the box, and any special instructions for the movers on the side or top of the box.

BONUS: Trying to Do Everything Yourself

Moving is superlatively taxing emotionally and physically. Get your family members or friends you are moving with involved in the whole process by delegating tasks. For example, the kids can take care of pets or fragile electronic items. They can also be tasked with categorizing items and labeling boxes. By sharing these tasks, you can focus on getting everything done.

Use These 10 Best Moving Tips for Moving Success

While it’s true that no one likes to move, these 10 best moving tips can help ensure the process is as stress-free as possible. You should start preparing for your move well in advance to give yourself time to pack and organize everything. If you do, you’ll be able to enjoy your new home sooner and relax.

5 Tips To Take Actions On If You Want To Leave A Legacy

At some point in our lives, we start thinking of how we’re living it so far; whether there are certain matters that require more of our attention and efforts. We begin reflecting on whether we’ve done our best to live a life we can be proud of – the kind of life that leaves a great legacy.

Most people don’t see resolutions as something that could change their lives, probably because they fade out quickly. They also happen to be short-term goals. In most cases of resolutions, you tend to fall by the wayside and go back to previous habits and enjoyable patterns.

Rather than thinking about resolutions, you should think about your legacy. It is the life you can look back with pride, something you would love to leave behind. How can this be accomplished? First, we get inspired. We all have a few personal role models, those with larger than life charm that have made a positive impact on our lives. We tend to get inspiration from those people whose journey we admire and respect. Then comes the work.

This article offers 5 tips you can take action on if you want to leave a great legacy behind.

Assess Yourself

tips on how to leave a legacy

Take quick thoughts about your past and pinpoint specific ways you intend to leave a legacy. Imagine what those who know you best would write about you once you’re gone. If you have got these things in mind, it will give you reasons to see what’s holding you back from being what you really what to be.

You Should Think Bigger

We didn’t just come to this life to eat, sleep, work, and die. We are all destined to be great. We were created with special talents to do something different and leave it better than it was found. The act of thinking beyond extraordinary is a key tip to leaving a legacy. You shouldn’t just think about what you can get for yourself, rather think of what you can come up with and belong to as well.

You Should Be Dedicated

You should be ready to think outside your comfort zone. In most cases, people never get past thinking concerning something. All they do is think rather than doing. Don’t just leave your ideas in your diaries, your thoughts; you should move your ideas into attested actions. However, you shouldn’t over-dedicate yourself to something, instead go for something small and go with it.

I’d advise you on taking relevant ideas which you’re enthusiastic about and make further findings on how you can get involved. Make sure you choose the action which you can take in-person and focus on the action that is kind of bigger outside of oneself.

You Should Have A Personal Role Model

leaving a legacy

It is very advisable that whenever you got the hang of things, you must relate and share your knowledge with someone else. Having a personal role model is quite important. They are people you can always rely on whenever you need help one way or the other. They should inspire you positively. A role model isn’t about making someone like you or creating someone in your image. Rather, a role model should be someone who allows other people to become the best versions of themselves.

You Should Be Consistent

At a point, our passions might change, which is fine. You should evolve yourself and try new things. You should not be scared to start something new, remain consistent until you reach your goals. Look for ways you can evolve yourself and even push your barriers.

How to Actually Start the Task You’ve Been Avoiding

Life would be great if we only did things that we wanted to do, each moment of the day. However, that sweet freedom also comes with a price. For example, many significant achievements of the humanity would never be realized if we could do only what our fleeting hearts wanted.

If you’re reading this, chances are you’re having a problem with procrastination and trying to find out a way to beat it. For example, you may be facing a big ugly project or another task that you’ve been putting off for too long. Or you may be looking for some tips to increase your productivity and avoid procrastinating on something.

Whatever the reason is, you’re doing the right thing by trying to minimize the effect of procrastination on your life. It has been linked to some adverse health and social effects such as stress, fatigue, and poorer performance.

Read further if you want to know how you can get stuff done.

Stop Making a Huge Deal Out of Anything

A big reason why people procrastinate is that they make a huge deal out of the project they need to complete. Psychologists call this “catastrophizing.” For example, Psych Central defines this term as “an irrational thought a lot of us have in believing that something is far worse than it is.”

As you probably know, the most common reasons for such behavior are related to how painful, boring, or difficult it is to complete the task.

Well, some tasks may be boring and difficult, but boredom and hard work aren’t legit reasons to avoid doing something! In fact, they won’t even have any profound impact on you. Procrastination, on the other hand, causes stress, so it can have a long-term effect on your overall well-being.

So, try to keep things in perspective. Of course, a task you’re yet to accomplish may not be your favorite, but you can get through it, that’s for sure.

Try to Find Benefits of Completing the Task

What is the first reason for postponing the task? Avoiding all the distress and inconveniences associated with its completion. While they certainly sound good, they are only short-term gains that cannot even compare to long-term consequences such as the stress of not doing it and possible implications for failing to complete it.

So, by doing the task instead of putting it off, you avoid all those long-term consequences. Moreover, there must be some benefits that you’ll get as a result of completing the task, such as praise or financial rewards.

For example, if you’ve been putting off starting a daily exercise session, think of both short- and long-term benefits of completing this task. They could be an increased energy and a boost to your self-esteem.

Get a Motivation Buddy

motivation buddy

Having someone to hold you accountable for your projects could be a good way to get you back in the game even after you’ve slipped into procrastination. Don’t believe it? There are many examples of people assisting others in achieving their goals.

Perhaps one of the most interesting and extraordinary examples comes from the United Kingdom. Jamie Brooks was caught in an unhealthy lifestyle and weighed 504 pounds (228 kilograms) while being only 31. The things started to change when one of his friends, Neil, decided to be his motivation buddy. His plan, however, was rather original, because it was to serve Jamie some tough love.

Neil sent Jamie a text every day for six weeks where he called him things, including ‘fat f***.’ Other motivational texts included “You’ll be dead by the time you’re 40.” And guess what? It worked! Jamie lost 294 pounds (133 kilograms) and dramatically improved the quality of his life.

Read more about the story of Jamie at Metro.

Divide Work into Smaller Pieces

Catastrophizing often means intimidation by the size of the project. If this is the situation that you’re facing, try to deal with the feeling of being overwhelmed by breaking up the project into smaller, digestible parts that you can achieve much more quickly and easily.

For example, if you have a large research paper to write, you can begin by writing only one small part. Let it be the easiest one, too.

Get Rid of Distractions

task distractions

One popular reason why people postpone doing something for days, weeks and even months is a lack of a productive environment. Indeed, the environment can be a huge barrier to productivity; for example, social media, phone calls, TV, and other distractions are well-known reasons why so many people fail to complete their tasks.

Drop the Perfectionism

Being a perfectionist involves a lot of risks for productivity. For example, these people tend to wait until things are perfect to start working, so this mentality can hold you back from doing your tasks.

Moreover, unrealistic standards created by perfectionism could be a threat to health and professional experience, so it’s better to avoid falling into this trap and focus on being better rather than perfect.

5 Really Useful Tips For Renting A Car Abroad

Often, the best way to go traveling is to rent a car and just head on out there. In that way, you can get off the beaten trail and see the world beyond the hotel in your own time and at your own speed. That’s way better than getting stuck in one of those tourist bus groups or trying to see everything with public transportation.

Of course, if you’re going to rent a car while you’re abroad, then you want to make sure that you do so correctly. After all, to get into an accident or get into a bunch of trouble can really put a crick on your vacation. In our experience, a lot of holidays can be ruined by a serious mishap as it throws a wrench in the group cohesion.

For that reason, here are the best tips you can use when renting a car abroad.

Make sure your driving license and insurance work where you’re going

You might think that one country’s driving license is as good as another’s, but that isn’t necessarily true. In some countries, they don’t accept driving licenses from other places.

Before you head off, check that your driving license will be accepted where you’re going. For example, US licenses aren’t accepted in a lot of countries, like Italy and Germany. So, check first with the embassy of your target destination.

Even better, get an international driving permit. These pieces of paper will let you drive nearly everywhere without any trouble.

While you’re at it, make sure you check if your car insurance also applies abroad and to other vehicles. If not, then it might be a good idea to get insurance from a company in the country that you’ll be in.

Note that a lot of car rental companies will insist that you have insurance. So, if you do have an insurance policy that will protect you while you’re abroad, take a copy of it so that you can prove you’re insured.

Is it safe to drive there?

You’d be amazed what some drivers in other countries get up to.

In many countries, for example, they don’t pay any attention to the dividing lines between lanes. They’ll just drive where there is space. In other places, the rule isn’t that you have right of way based on signage or some kind of agreement, but based on the size of the vehicle you’re driving.

Then, there are countries where there are more potholes than road, where chickens and pigs regularly cross the road and where the people use the road surface to dry their beans or crops.

Driving in these countries can really elevate your heartbeat and stain the enjoyment of everybody in the car. For that reason, make sure to check first what other people have to say about the country you’re going. You can get a lot of ideas online.

Before you get behind the wheel, take pictures of everything

take car pictures

This has saved me so much money over the years. Before I go out, I take pictures of everything inside and out. Every scratch, dent or mark I can find, I photograph. I also photograph the rental agent with the car somewhere in the sequence, as well as the fuel gauge and the seats.

Why?

Because the pictures will serve as proof of the car’s condition before you hit the road.

If they say that a dent wasn’t there in the morning, you can show that it most certainly was. You’d be surprised how often they’ll try to get different tourists to pay for the same tactic. Don’t be one of those people. Take pictures of everything. It will save you a lot of heartache in the long run.

Also, make sure that you know how much fuel you had when you started out and that you bring it back with just as much. This can be annoying, but they’ll often give you the car with an empty tank and not give you any kind of compensation when you return it with a full one.

You need navigation

navigational map

Have you tried navigating with a paper map lately?

Back before the days of GPS and mapping technology, that was a major reason people broke up, you know. Don’t put your relationship under that kind of strain.

There are a lot of mapping apps that you can download straight to your phone. There are even apps which don’t require to be connected online but just work with your GPS.

Take your device with you when you go out. It will mean less time in the car and less chances for you and your partner to yell at each other.

It’s a holiday, not a fantasy

And finally, remember that it’s a holiday and not a fantasy. Just because you’re not back home doesn’t mean you’re suddenly invulnerable.

So many people seem to forget that. The result?

People’s chances of getting into accidents are much higher when they’re in foreign countries.

Don’t end up as a part of that statistic.

Drive safe. Pay attention to how the people in the country drive and try to drive safely like them.

For example, a friend of mine got into an accident because he stopped in front of a zebra crossing to let a person pass in Turkey. The cars behind him hadn’t expected that (they don’t stop for crossings there) and crashed fully into the back of his car.

Obviously, that left for a sticky situation where the Turkish guy was yelling and so was my friend. What’s the point of zebra crossings, if you’re not going to stop for them anyway?

And though he had insurance and it was covered, his vacation was still not as much fun as it could have been.

Don’t let that happen to you. Understand how the people drive and know what to expect.

Roofing Inspection Checklist for Homeowners

Performing preventative maintenance on your roof can make your life a lot easier. Many of today’s repair orders could have easily been avoided by a simple roof inspection by the homeowner.

However, some people aren’t comfortable climbing a ladder and standing on top of a roofing system. If you are one of those people, it’s a good idea if you can get your roof inspected by a professional. It will be less costly than waiting for an actual problem to happen.

With that in mind, let’s have a look at the most common inspection techniques you can actually use.

Cracks

Sloped roofs are the most common residential structures since they easily repel rain with an associated gutter system. They are mostly required by homeowners’ associations with strict building guidelines.

The surfaces considered here are mostly composite shingles- the most common roofing surface for residential homes. Finding broken shingles can even be done on the ground, as it is really easy to spot a missing shingle from even a few yards away.

Cracked shingles may be a little more difficult to spot, so getting up close and personal may be the only way to go. You will see a dark seam on the outside. When you get up close, be sure to peel it back the best that you can and see if it has any give to it.

It should not fold or crease as you peel back; it should remain sturdy. Anything less than a solid, seamless shingle should be considered cracked or damaged and should be replaced asap.

Leaks

Another part of the surface that can be cracked is the caulk around the base of the flashing. Inspecting the flashing seals are extremely important as these are the number one cause of leaks over time. You may also notice some rusted spots on the caulk, which can result in cracks shortly so make sure to repair and replace quickly.

The rubber boots are the pieces around the vent pipes, mostly near the apex of the roof. Check to make sure that there aren’t any cracks in these pieces either, as there could be a significant leak resulting from such instances.

Replacing these parts can be a bit difficult, so consider calling in a professional should you spot any issues.

Decay

Finally, you could find organic growths on and around the roofing surface in the form of moss, algae or mold. This indicates that there is decay occurring on the plywood that supports the shingles.

moss on roof

Plywood can become decayed if exposed to too much water, so any areas with cracked or missing shingles are usually a good place to look for such decay. Decay can’t only damage your roof but it can also affect someone’s health if gone unchecked for too long.

Final Thoughts

If you are hesitant to go up and do your own roof inspection, don’t do it. The fear of being up there can paralyze your balance and result in injury. You may want to hire someone else to climb atop your home and do the roof inspection.

In fact, a great way to get this inspection done correctly is to request a roofing quote by a local roofer. This may sound a bit expensive but it’s actually not. You can actually end up saving more if you do.

inspecting roof

And if your local roofer finds a problem, he can give you an estimate of the severity of the damage as well as the overall cost of the project.

The most important thing here is that you pay attention to the condition of your roofing system and perform preventative maintenance whenever possible. This will ensure a long life and an ease of any larger concerns down the road.

Basic Car Repair Everyone Should Know

Most of us agree that car repair can be costly. Every time you take your automobile to a repair shop, you are forced to part with some amount of money.

There are different categories of car repairs. Major repairs need to be handled by people who are well-trained in handling various issues that affect cars. The other category is the minor repairs. Although you can seek the services of a mechanic, you can do most of them on your own.

Here are some of the basic car repairs that you can handle to save money.

Changing oil

Oil ensures that your car engine operates smoothly and lasts for long. As a car owner, you need to check the oil levels of your car on a regular basis.

You can change your car’s oil without seeking help from experts. In fact, it is one of the fundamental skills that any car owner should have.

Changing your car’s oil involves a few steps. First, you will need to remove the drain plug. Secondly, unscrew and empty the oil filter. After that, fix the plug into its original position, remove the filler hole cap then pour fresh oil. It’s as simple as that!

Jumpstart a car

jumpstart car basic car repair

You don’t need specialized training to know how to jump-start your vehicle. Any car enthusiast can do this simple task and save on the repair costs.

It is necessary to jump start the car if its battery dies. All you need is another vehicle whose battery has the same voltage as yours. The good news is that most car owners are always willing to help each other to solve this problem. The first step is to connect the jumper cables from a Samaritan’s battery to yours. While doing so, ensure that both the vehicles are off.

Changing spark plugs

We all know the critical role that spark plugs play in a car. These are small but essential devices found in the cylinder. They are responsible for powering your car.

Your car’s spark plug can wear down once your vehicle covers a specific number of miles. Once that happens, you need to know how to fix it on your own.

Locate the exact location of the spark plug, remove the connecting wire and then remove the faulty spark plug. In its position, put the replacement then fix the plug wires to their respective positions.

Changing a flat tire

changing flat tire basic car repair

This is another necessary basic car repair practice that you need to know. Since you’ll never know when and where you will have a flat tire, you need to be prepared. Changing tires is always classified under life-saving skills.

First, you will have to lift the car off the ground using a jack stand. After that, remove the lug nuts and then the flat tire. Put your spare tire into position and wrench the lug nuts back to their place.

Changing brake pads

Brake pads can be the only thing that will stand between you and what would have been a nasty accident. This is because brake failures cause most accidents, so you should ensure that your brake pads are always in excellent condition.

Changing brakes is not an expensive or complicated process. You can do it and save money on car repair. The procedure of changing brake pads is almost similar to that of changing the tires.

Once you remove the wheels, remove the slider bolts and the older brakes. Fix the new brake pads and secure them in position using slider bolts

Changing car battery

A car battery can die when you least expect it so be sure to routinely check the state of your battery. This will help you know if you need to get a replacement soon.

To change your car battery, remove all the covers then disconnect the negative cables. Shift the clamp from the battery post and then disconnect the positive wires. Remove all the screws and replace the old battery with a new one.

Removing scratches from the car

Although it may appear to be a minor aesthetic problem, it can end up costing you some good amount of money. After all, you would like your car to have the best appearance and would pay any amount to achieve this goal.

Did you know that getting rid of scratches is another basic car repair that you can do at home?

To execute this task, you need to find out the depth of the scratch first. Secondly, sand-scratch and clean the area. Apply some rubbing compound on the scratch. Use the same compound to polish the area and then wax it. With these steps, the scratch will be eliminated.

Replacing the wipers

Do you really have to pay an expert to repair your windshield wipers?

Save yourself from this unnecessary cost by executing the repair on your own. The poor performance of your wipers is likely due to broken blades. To repair them, simply lift the wiper from the windshield and press the small tab to allow the blade to come off. Replace both wipers and you’re good to go.

Replace air filters

Most car owners tend to overlook air filters but they are as important as the other parts of a vehicle. The filters protect your car’s engine from dust and other solid contaminants.

Their effectiveness tends to degrade with time, which makes replacement inevitable. To do that, you need to find the exact location of the air filter and then remove it. Clean the air filter housing before you insert a new filter in it. This basic car repair can save you a good amount of money.

From the article, it is clear that you don’t have to attend any class to perform basic car repair and maintenance. The tips above can help you save money that you would otherwise spend on a mechanic to handle your car’s issues.

The Surprising Success Strategy That Will Empower Your Next Steps

You’ve developed some goals- serious, life-changing goals. You’re feeling pretty bad-ass about the future. When you think about making these things happen, you feel exhilarated and energized.

But, perhaps, you are a little intimidated, too.

If that is the case, you could read another self-help book and listen to yet another podcast to get motivated. Or you could try something a bit different by time-traveling to the past to gain wisdom and plan your next move.

Dwelling in the past? Isn’t that super backward and negative?

The good news is that you can use the “how” of past success to move towards future success. Past success provides important clues about how you operate when you’re moving in a positive direction.

How do you usually overcome obstacles? How do you cope when things get rough?

Even if your previous achievements are very different from what you want to do next, they can still provide important clues as to how you can best tackle the next phase. Plus, it can be inspiring to remind yourself that you have and you can accomplish great things.

Here’s how you can do this amazing success strategy.

Write Down Past Successes

writing goals

Take a moment to revel in previous triumphs. Relive the glorious days and be shameless.

Write down all your earlier accomplishments, even the tiny ones you think don’t matter. Think about milestones completed, bad habits broken and times when you truly shone.

My personal example is quitting smoking. I used to smoke a packet of Peter Stuyvesant cigarettes a day, wasting brain power and dollars trying to get my next fix. I am proud to say that in 2005, I stopped smoking for good. I didn’t think I ever could do it, but it’s been twelve years!

Analyze How You Made Past Goals Successful

Get analytical and deconstruct these past achievements. What did you actually do to make those things happen? What did you have to not do to make things happen?

Be as specific as possible.

What did you tell yourself in order to meet the goal? How did you manage setbacks? What environment(s) helped you to become successful? Who inspired and supported you?

Also, if you are feeling brave, write down all the things that didn’t work.

For example, when I quit smoking, I found the following strategies helpful: reading books about the science of addiction, staying away from “triggering” scenarios and tracking daily progress. What didn’t work: feeling guilty and ashamed, nicotine gum, acupuncture and reading about ill-effects of smoking cigarettes. And watching those anti-smoking ads only made me want to smoke more (go figure!).

Develop Strategies Based on Previous Successes To Accomplish Future Goals

thinking strategies

You now have a picture of what has worked for you in the past, so similar tactics are likely to work in the future. This is the premise of “Solutions-Focused Counseling”, a technique whereby you identify “the differences that make a difference”. You recognize what you have been doing right, rather than dwelling on seemingly insurmountable problems and obstacles.

With that in mind, write a list of strategies that will provide the best chance of future success. Here are some ideas:

  • Proximity: What environment(s) will help you thrive? What needs to change in your daily life?
  • Self-Talk: What phrases and stories do you need to tell yourself on a regular basis?
  • Tools and props: What types of gadgets, if any, will help you meet your goal? What apps/newsletters will keep you on track?
  • Support: Who will you ask to check on your progress? What will you require of your groups/social circles? How can family and friends best demonstrate their support?
  • Heroes: Who do you find inspiring? What lessons can you learn from their success?
  • Inspiration and motivation: What resources will keep you motivated during setbacks? What types of books, podcasts or CD’s seem to get you going on bad days?

By now, you will have a list of future goals, past achievements, past goal strategies that did and didn’t work and potential goal strategies for future success. You will also have a greater sense of what makes you tick and what things will make you more likely to be successful.

So, go start doing these things today!

3 Good Reasons Why Planning Just Isn’t For You

Planning. Simply the sound of this word is enough to give me a rage fit and a subsequent migraine.

Whether you want to start a business, do well at college or just become good at any kind of activity, one of the most frequent pieces of advice you will get is to plan everything. Even when it comes to relationships, planning is still considered to be essential.

At first, I became really angry and frustrated when I read all those articles because I am terrible at planning– really. The only thing I have managed to plan so far is my shopping list.

I have a bright memory from childhood. It’s when I decided it was time to get all fancy and organized and created a schedule of the entire following day. I was so serious that I even used an A3 sheet of paper for my schedule and I’m not kidding you.

And now, you can try to guess how much I lasted on my schedule.

I managed to do only one thing from the list and that’s to wake up. The rest of my day went haywire, as usual.

After years of struggling with my hectic and disorganized self, I started to question the premise and had anti-planning thoughts.

Can planning really do miracles to your life? I highly doubt that. I believe that, like everything on Earth, it has its downsides. Here are some of them.

Plans make you frustrated

frustrated planner

I’m a perfectionist- yeah, that’s weird for someone who hates plans- and it backfires so much when it comes to crossing out items from my to-do or even shopping lists. If I can’t manage to find something or if I postpone a tiny errand to the next day, I will feel dissatisfied with myself. No matter how many tasks I do that same day, that one uncrossed thing will bug me.

What to do instead?

If you’re like me and “1 pound of sour cream” in your shopping list can ruin your day if uncrossed, try creating lists of things you actually DO as you go on with your day. This will help you feel a sense of accomplishment and boost your confidence. At the end of the day, you’ll be looking at a list of things you actually managed to do and not those you didn’t manage.

Plans don’t make THAT big of a difference

A lot of people expect to become time-management gurus the moment they start creating plans. But, guess what?

That doesn’t happen in a snap. It has to be learned much like any other action and habit out there. More than that, though planning helps you become more organized, the main point is that you need to do things. Planning alone won’t get you anywhere, except the fact that you’ll become incredibly good at creating lists.

What to do instead?

Try the immediate action strategy. Planning is preparation, and preparation is usually good. But, let’s be honest. Most of the time, we start making plans to procrastinate and to feel like we are actually doing something good about our lives.

So, instead of indulging into writing another list, choose a tiny action. Let’s say, clean a small section of your working table or finally move all the clothes from the chair to your drawers.

Plans can increase your anxiety

anxious planning

Life goes by its own rules with little regard for our plans. People forget to return a call or even show up, cars break and bad weather strikes unexpectedly. Life is haywire and that’s probably the reason we like plans so much. They help us make a little sense of the mess that’s constantly going on.

When something unexpected and unavoidable intervenes with your perfectly designed plan, it can make you feel like you are out of control and this adds more stress. You have a lot of things to deal with and now you have another issue to solve. In essence, it means less time for more things to accomplish.

What to do instead?

Choose a couple of pivotal actions and make them vital for you. See, there’s a lot going on with our lives, but we don’t forget the basic things anyway. We eat, sleep and drink.

Choose a couple of simple actions and make them an absolute must of your day. Soon, you will be used to them that you won’t need a plan to remind you anymore. You won’t beat yourself up for not sticking strictly to your schedule.

I’m not saying you should totally forget about lists and to-dos completely. They can be useful when you are packing for a trip or having a really hectic time. However, I don’t believe you need a to-do list for every day of your life. To me, they are more of a play-pretend game than of real usefulness.

What do you think about planning and to-do lists? Are they overrated or do they really make a big difference?

Share your insights below and maybe you can help me and other people who are all about anti-planning change our minds.

Factors to Consider When Selecting the Appropriate Financing Option

Startup capital is hard to come by. Even with your savings, you will soon realize that you need a capital boost and that is when you will have to choose between the two common means of funding — debt and equity financing.

What are these two funding options?

Essentially, what these two options ask is whether you (1) need to take a loan for capital or (2) get an investor willing to invest in your company. Either option has significant business consequences, hence the thorough considerations.

Under debt financing, you will borrow money from a lender at an interest and you will be expected to repay the money after an agreed duration. On the other hand, equity financing is where you trade the ownership of your company for investment funds. Often, equity investors include venture capitalists and angel investors.

As a result of the disparity associated with these business financing options, you cannot get funds from either source blindly.

Before signing any agreements, keep in mind the following factors:

Amount needed

How much capital does your business need? The amount of capital required by your business will always determine the means of raising the money. It doesn’t make sense to look for a venture capitalist when your business needs only a small financial injection. Therefore, when in need of a small amount in capital, debt financing is the best alternative.

Venture capitalists and other investors make big investments and it is a financially sound decision to look for them when in need of a big sum of money.

Urgency

loan urgency

Loans are viable funding solutions when in urgent need of funds. Although there are associated costs, the urgency of the need supersedes the associated transactional fees making debt financing a great approach. Some of the easily available and affordable debt financing options include SBA loans or borrowing from peer-to-peer lenders online.

In the meantime, all forms of equity financing require time. You have to find the investors, pitch your business to the investors, prepare financial projections, draw up legal documents, and convince the investors to invest in your company. Equity financing is therefore the best alternative when looking for funds to use in growing the business later on.

Other needs besides money

Are you looking for something other than a financial boost? Do you have big expansion plans? Do you foresee rapid growth in business and are in need of a big boost? You need equity financing.

Equity lenders often look at a business’s potential for growth and how they can make greater returns for their investments. If you foresee this and are looking for financing to get you there, then you need to start your search for equity lenders. You will need to prepare a comprehensive business plan, detailed financial projections, and reports of the business history. These are essential for venture capitalists or angel investors but unnecessary in debt financing.

For equity financing, you also need to have a strong management team, a strong marketing acumen, and passion for your business. These will help in convincing the investors and also require a lot of time.

Although venture capitalists own a stake in your company, they will offer excellent and professional advice and guidance to your business meaning that you will avoid unnecessary pitfalls and mistakes. Equity investors are highly experienced and they will be the best mentors for your business.

Just like many other millennials running startup businesses, you may find yourself ridden with student loans and other debts. Besides providing help with the business, equity lenders will guide you on how to get control over the many debts. The most effective and the commonly advocated debt management strategy is debt consolidation.

The option of debt consolidation gives control over repayments by reducing the number of loans payable monthly and also the amount payable monthly at the end of the debt repayment period. With the lower interest rate charged on the debt consolidation loan, you will be at a better position to manage your debts and expenses. Besides personal loans, debt consolidation is an effective debt financing alternative for student loans, outstanding creditor bills, and credit card debt.

Sharing your company

If you are looking for a big investment from venture capitalists, then you should come to terms with the fact that you will have to share your company with an investor. If sharing ownership and the profits of the company doesn’t auger well with you, then, debt financing will be your option. You should note that a loan may not be enough to get you the necessary funding.

When in need of expertise and the guidance of an equity investor alongside funding, then, you will have to clearly highlight that fact and ask for funding to be repaid.

Besides getting bank loans and asking for mere funding from investors, you can take advantage of platforms offering crowdfunding. You should also consider talking to your friends and family, or get loans from non-governmental institutions, microfinance organizations or even getting the affordable government loans. There also are accelerators for startups that one can benefit from.

Interests and fees

interests and fees

When taking the debt financing option, you have to keep in mind the interest rate charged and the associated transaction fees. The rate charged is determined by your credit score. With possible high debts from business and personal loans, as well as your student loans, you may be considered a risky borrower. In this case, your loan application could be declined or approved at a high interest rate.

While considering debt financing, look at the repayment terms. Be smart, get the lender’s amortization schedule, and determine if the loan will be expensive or affordable at the end of the repayment period.

In conclusion, your choice will depend on your personal interests, the urgency of funding, the cost of funding, and future implications on the growth of the company. Finding the appropriate financing option has lasting effects in how your business runs after financing. In some cases, a business may even need both funding options for success.

3 Steps To Effective Change Management

Have you ever watched the movie Moneyball?

The lead character Billy Beane, played by Brad Pitt, pressed forward in his plans to re-create the Oakland A’s baseball team. He pursued this goal with a single-minded determination, stating continuously, “It’s a process, It’s a process.”

Billy understood that in deconstructing the old way of doing things, you create the potential to build a new way. The story of Billy Beane is an example of how a systematic process can change the way you play the game. Following through from beginning to end is the key.

Research from Prosci indicates that “projects with excellent change management effectiveness are six times more likely to meet or exceed project objectives.” Completing the process improves not only the bottom line. It also builds trust and maintains continuity within the organization, thus reducing chaos within the organization.

Three Steps to Create an Effective Plan for Change

Use these steps as a template to create any new plan or goal. Change introduces the opportunity for an intentional plan that keeps the process moving forward.

These three steps may seem simple, but one misstep in any part of the process fractures the flow of the work. How many times have you seen a plan fall apart because there was no follow through on the goals?

Awareness

The first step in any process for change begins with an awareness of the situation. Awareness can come in many forms: the awareness that something needs to change, an awareness that there is a problem, or even an awareness that something just does not feel right.

As Claire Hartman, President of First Community Title in Temple, TX stated, “There was something I needed to work on from a professional standpoint, but I wasn’t sure how to get there. It was also personal. I could tell something was a little broken, but I couldn’t figure out how or what it was or even conceive how to look for what it was. It was a gut feeling. I didn’t know where to go.”

Awareness generates an opening for change.

Once you have created an awareness for change, then you start to look at the broader view and the available options. I sometimes call this the fantasyland view because, now, all things are possible.

Fantasyland view equals brainstorming. You explore all the possibilities, even the ones outside of your comfort zone. If you don’t expand your awareness of opportunities and issues, then you may miss options that change the way you accomplish business for the better.

Categorize both facts, which are verifiable and expectations, which are personal/organizational beliefs of what one wishes were true. The activity of awareness moves you into the second part, which is words.

Words

Words allows you to start putting form to fantasy. Words offer a place in the process where judgments of good or bad, or right or wrong do not exist. Talk about or write out all the possibilities that began to emerge with the first step of awareness. Confirm verifiable facts versus beliefs, which may differ from person to person within the group. With words, you create a plan for what you want to do and how you want to proceed.

management words

The second phase offers individuals the opportunity to discuss ideas and encourages creativity or innovation. If the words, “We have always done it that way” are uttered in this step, then you may need to take yourself or others in the group back to the awareness stage.

Fantasyland narrows into feasible options for what you want to accomplish and how you are going to achieve these changes. You may set goals and timelines so that there is a systematic approach to the changes. You also set rules for engagement to help keep the focus on the plan, not the problems.

Actions

The third and final step offers actions. When you ask the question, “Which tells the true nature of a person or an organization, their words or actions?” almost universally, the answer is actions.

By this step, you or individuals within the organization should see renewed awareness. The goals and objectives are written out with timelines. Until awareness and words become actions, effective change cannot occur, either personally or organizationally.

Remember, it’s a process, it’s a process. The process of change management takes time and forward momentum to be effective.

management action

A misstep of any of these three steps fractures the process. Without awareness, plans reduce to a narrower view, possibly missing key options that could benefit you or the organization. When you do not discuss possible options, then you may lose valuable information that identifies what regulations or limitations impede goals, and miss new emerging ideas. Without actions, the genuine nature of individuals and organizations diminishes due to inactivity and dissonance with the words.

As you forge through these steps toward your goals, it is important to remind yourself and others, “It’s a process. It’s a process.” The change you create by maintaining these three steps helps you and your team to become even more effective for a game-changing season.

Packing Made Simple: 7 Tips to Make Your Move Go Smoother

A lot goes into planning and executing a move especially when it’s long distance. Even if you’re just moving across town, there are a lot of logistics to plan for, from packing the boxes, to packing the truck, and finally organizing your new place to make it a new home.

Regardless of how far you’re moving from your current home, here are 7 tips to help make packing and moving smooth and (nearly) stress-free.

Packing Boxes More Efficiently

packing boxes efficiently

Packing boxes takes a lot of time, but it is so much easier when you have all of the supplies you need on hand. Purchase boxes, bubble wrap, and packing paper to keep breakable items safe while in transit to your new home.

Sheets, blankets, and towels should be packed in larger boxes since they tend to be lighter, while smaller and more sturdy boxes are best saved for breakable and heavy items like dishes, glasses, and other kitchen appliances.

See Also: Protect Your Breakable Items By Following These Packing Tips

What Not to Pack

Keep important documents like medical records, school documents, and anything you may need at your new house handy so you can access them as needed. Consider packing a backpack with these items along with anything else that is irreplaceable or you’d rather not lose, like jewelry, cash, prescriptions, and keys.

Additionally, don’t pack anything perishable, toxic, or dangerous like dairy products, fertilizer, or gasoline. Instead, dispose of them in a safe, environmentally friendly manner before you move.

Get Organized

labeling boxes

Create a plan to help break your move into more manageable pieces. Set deadlines and stick to them to keep yourself on track so you’ll be all finished with packing and ready to load the moving truck come moving day. Label your boxes clearly, and have an idea where they’ll go in your new house to make unpacking that much easier.

Decide Whether or Not to Hire Movers

A professional moving company has the potential to make your move easier, but is hiring one the best fit for you? If you have the extra money in your budget, it might be a good option considering that hiring movers has the potential to save you the stress and backache that often accompany loading the moving truck yourself.

Generally speaking, the only disadvantage to hiring movers is the cost—moving companies tend to be pretty pricey. You’ll need to weigh through the pros and cons to determine whether a moving company is worth the financial investment for you.

Make Moving Day Easier

Planning ahead is the best way to make moving day go smoothly. Make sure you have help lined up if you need it, and that you have water and snacks on hand to keep any helpers sustained and happy.

Pack an overnight bag with a change of clothes, your toiletries, and anything else you’ll need over the next 24 hours. This way, you won’t have to frantically sort through boxes to find what you need when you’re already exhausted from the move.

How to Pack a Moving Truck

As you label boxes, consider marking heavier ones so you know what to load up first in your truck. Make sure you have extra packing equipment ready to make loading the truck go smoother like a dolly to move large furniture and heavy boxes, stretch wrap to protect furniture and other large items, and extra straps and bungee cords to secure items.

Unloading and Unpacking

Prior to unloading the moving truck, take a walk through your new home to get a good idea where you want things to go. Measure doorways to be sure furniture will fit through, and lay down plastic tarps to cover the floor to prevent dirt and mud from being tracked through your house. Unload furniture first and place it in the desired rooms, then unload everything else and start getting settled in your new home. If others are helping you unload, you might consider adding cards to doorways with room labels that match your box labels. This will make it easy for movers to place your boxes in the right rooms.

Don’t Forget to Make a Plan

Making a plan and staying organized are essential to a positive moving experience, and who doesn’t want to have one of those? With the help of these 7 moving tips, you’re well on your way to crafting the ideal moving-day plan for your unique situation!

After the addition of Instagram Stories to the app, it is now becoming more popular and controversial. You might be wondering why I am telling you all this. Well, Instagram can also make you famous.

Having a strong following on Instagram would help you get more sales for your business, more exposure to your talent, larger traffic on your website and a stronger community for your brand.

There are hundreds of Instagrammers with thousands of followers, but how in the world do you actually get so many followers? See, this post is not a hack that would get you thousands of followers in minutes.

Today, I have got five effective tips to help you grow your Instagram followers. So, let’s start the post on how to increase Instagram followers and why.

Follow Other People in Your Niche

I have a photographer friend who started from scratch (0 followers) and started following every photography account he could find. By the end of an hour, he followed almost 670 accounts, and surprisingly 175 follow backs, and 50 other similar accounts followed him later. Moreover, after posting several portfolio pictures, he liked 10-15 photos on other accounts and left some positive comments and praises on their work. These several actions got him almost 700 followers in just a week and are now growing more and more.

I would recommend this to every new Instagram account as it helps people to discover you. Moreover, start liking the pictures in your category. Use similar hashtags so that people can also start following your photos as well. This is the most authentic and organic way to increase Instagram followers free.

Craft a Theme for Your Account

So, you’ve already started following other accounts. Great, people are now going to start noticing your photos. Now is the time to give them something that they love.

I’ve discovered that people love a well presented and themed account and you’ll get likes and followers this way. Create a small but impressive bio to inform people about your photos. For mine, I created something entirely different from what I am. No tech, no Android devices but just sharing my best pictures in monochrome these days.

Socialize With Other People As Well

Well, that is what social media is for! Start commenting on other photos that you like and repost them on your account. Reply to the comments you receive and keep it authentic rather than spamming with words like “Nice and Amazing”. In 2017, this is the simplest way to increase Instagram followers.

Create Your Hashtags, Encourage Others Too!

hashtag instagram

Who said new hashtags are only reserved to Twitters? Many companies and brands created their hashtags and encouraged their followers to use them too.

A very simple use of this tip is to expose your brand to new people. An online shop entirely based on Instagram offers free giveaways when people share their T-Shirts and use the particular hashtag to get discovered by the brand. If you would be lucky enough to share it with more than 500 people, then chances are, other people would automatically recognize it too. To increase Instagram followers, there are several other hashtags as well, but the recent update has blocked them.

Run a Giveaway or Contest

This is something that I would try once I have established a good follower base of around 5-6K followers. If you think that you can promote your sales by providing free giveaways, then why not. Ask people to upload a particular type of picture, and mention your tags and Instagram account in the caption. It is an excellent way to grow your fan-base both offline and online.

So, this was my take on the five practical tips to increase Instagram followers in 2017. No hacks, no spams. These are just simple tricks to become more famous. Do share your views on this post and let me know if you have found these ways helpful.

What You Need To Know About Wisdom Tooth And Its Extraction

Is the removal of our wisdom teeth really necessary? Some are unaffected by them while others were born with the misfortune of experiencing painful conditions. If you belong to the latter group, then know that sometimes the wise decision is to part from your wisdom teeth. And if you don’t have them removed at the right time, then be ready to face certain complications that include dental infections.

Wisdom teeth, what are they?

wisdom-teeth

Our wisdom teeth are our third molars, or the grinding teeth, located at the upper and lower back of our mouth.

But then, why do we call our third molars wisdom teeth? Well, the growth of our third molars often happens at an age when a person is said to move from a phase of adolescence to adulthood. It is the general belief that as we age, we also gain wisdom and become more mature human beings. While this is not necessarily the case for every adult on the planet, our wisdom teeth are called such for simply growing at a time when a person is supposedly wiser. But since they are the last teeth to erupt, there is often no longer any room in the mouth to accommodate their growth.

During a dental checkup, your dentist will have you take an orthopantomogram x-ray so he or she can assess if there is a need for you to have a removal. The x-ray will provide your dentist a clear picture of what is going on with and around your wisdom teeth. An examination of your x-ray will also help your dentist determine the kind of extraction he or she has to make for each of your wisdom teeth.

Sometimes you might need a minor surgery to remove your wisdom teeth. If that is the case, it is helpful to take a rest at home and prepare yourself before having the surgery so you can have a speedy recovery.

Why must we remove our wisdom teeth?

Again, not all people will need to have their wisdom teeth removed. But most of the time, there is a need for an extraction since the teeth’s growth are in an abnormal position. Typical cases of wisdom teeth removal involve the tooth tilting at an angle, growing sideways, or even moving perpendicular to the tooth next to it. Some wisdom teeth cannot even grow out since they get trapped below the gum line due to lack of space. That is a common problem especially for people with relatively large teeth and a small jaw.

There are also cases when a removal is imperative since an infection developed because of food that got trapped in the uneven spaces between the teeth. Sometimes, the plaque also develops, and rapid bacterial growth occurs; this is known as pericoronitis.

With the growth of their wisdom teeth, other patients undergo a change in their teeth bite and inevitably experience a misalignment of their jaws. Also, with the abnormal growth of wisdom teeth, patients are unable to provide the proper dental hygiene, and that results in tooth decay particularly of those at the back of the mouth which are hard to reach.

If there is a continuous throbbing pain or sometimes a severe ache in your tooth, then that could indicate you have an abscess. Though painful and irritating, it isn’t surprising since wisdom teeth complications can likely lead to sores due to the molars’ location. And when the wisdom teeth are halfway through, it becomes even harder to keep that area clean and clear of any bacteria.

When worse comes to worst, patients will have to undergo a root canal to save their teeth or the next molars before an infection destroys them completely. An antibiotic might also work and help heal any infection. But it is only after an infection has subsided that a tooth extraction can take place. That is why it is best to remove the wisdom tooth after treating an infection to avoid any further complications.

Who will do the extraction and how much will it cost?

wisdom teeth extraction

Once you have decided to have a tooth extraction, and if it will require surgery, your dentist may refer you to an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Dentists specializing in dental surgery must often do the extractions because of how sensitive wisdom teeth are positioned. Also, the level of difficulty of an extraction depends on the position of the wisdom tooth to be extracted. That is why it’s good to have a professional do the work.

When it comes to expenses, the removal of a single wisdom tooth may range from $200 to $600 while all four extractions may cost around $1,500. If your wisdom tooth extraction requires major dental care, then the charge could be higher than usual. But you can always check with your local dental insurance provider or even with your dentist to see if there is an affordable dental plan to help you with the expenses.

How to remove wisdom teeth

Before any treatment, your dental surgeon will have to discuss with you the available options and the risks involved in removing your wisdom tooth. That is an opportunity for you to learn about your case and to raise any questions you have that concerns the extraction. In the end, commencing a surgery depends on you, and it is essential that you make an informed decision.

If you push through with the extraction, your oral surgeon will begin an operation with a particular method of sedation, and your dentist will numb the tooth and tissues in the affected area. Once the anesthesia starts to take effect, the area will go numb. To test the anesthesia, the dentist will apply pressure on your gum. There shouldn’t be any sharp pain, but instead, you will only feel a nudge.

The surgeon will then slice or cut through any gum, tissue, or bones covering the tooth using a scalpel. And then he or she will use extraction instruments to loosen the tooth from its socket or any connective tissue. During this time, expect an increased pressure or pushing in the area around the tooth to be extracted. Should you feel any pain, you have to inform your dentist or surgeon right away. And once the tooth becomes loose enough, it can be removed easily using dental forceps.

After pulling your tooth out, your dentist may then have to stitch the surrounding gums or tissues to help speed up the recovery process. You might feel uncomfortable after, but as long as you follow the instructions given to you, you can expect a full recovery in no time.

7 Simple Ways To Overcome Negative Thinking & Set Yourself Up To Win This Year

Negative thinking is such a downer and it gets in the way of most things. You start to lack creativity, you feel down in the dumps, and you actually start to get exactly what you expect – NEGATIVITY!

Most of us know that it would help to be a lot more optimistic about life but how do you do that when you are so used to thinking and feeling the way you do? I personally attack negative thinking in a range of ways.

Here are a few ideas that will work for you too.

Wake up earlier than your household

One thing that I know makes my negative thinking worse is being forced awake by my partner, the alarm clock, or my kids. If I am woken up, then I feel behind already and forced into everyone else’s agenda. Before I know it, the resentment and negativity starts to spike right at at the start of the day.

This no longer happens!

Now, I creep out of bed and creep past the princesses’ rooms and get downstairs, get myself a coffee and do the next point. This makes me feel a lot more in control of my mind. Yes, I love my family but I need time alone first!

And the alarm clock is just plain horrid so I never allow that to wake me up. I tap into the energy of Spirit and ask to be woken up at the time I choose and it works. Don’t ask me how. Just give it a go.

Make a commitment to wake up at least two to four hours earlier than everyone else to ensure you have enough time to feel in control of your day before everyone else wakes up. Imagine all that you can do during this time.

Journal

writing on journal

This is a key idea to defeat negative thinking. The time that I spend alone, I spend connecting with the energy of the Universe, reminding myself of my goals, and writing down who I choose to be.

This makes me feel in control and that makes me feel more positive. I write down my goals for my life and for that day and I decide who I need to be in order to make them come about.

If I want to make so much money that day, then I know I have to be willing to sell.  I write “I am confident and bold enough to ask for the sale today” and I spend some time feeling the emotions of being that bold, confident selling machine. Of course, there is no room for negative thinking if that is who I choose to be.

This works for whatever you want. Decide what you want to have and then decide who you need to be and then deliberately choose to take on the persona of the person that you choose. Write down what you would feel, how you would dress, and act if you are going to make that goal happen.

Set an hourly reminder

This is more of an emergency measure but I use it regularly because although I appear to be positive, I usually have to defeat a lot of negativity to appear that way. I no longer to leave this to chance so as soon as I finish my initial journal session, I set the timer on my phone to prompt me every hour.

The prompt reminds me to catch myself and check what I am thinking. If I have degenerated into crazy thinking, then I open a file on Evernote or whip out my journal again and write very quickly a series of I am, I have, and I do statements that remind me who I choose to be in that moment.

This usually works to get me ramped up again. The creativity returns and I can get back to whatever I was doing. This only need take 60 seconds or so but it works to bring me back to centre.

Have more orgasms

There is something pretty powerful about that moment of heightened emotion. When I am trying to get a new thought pattern secured in my brain, I make the decision to masturbate or make-love it in!

At that moment of orgasm, my brain feels more open, more willing to accept new thoughts, and I usually have something planned. I visualise my goals and what I want to achieve and it just feels more real in that moment as though I am changing the course of my brain cells. And I personally, think I am.

Stop second guessing

overthinking

When I spend time overthinking and second guessing the ideas that bubble up within me, I always end up internally beating myself up and feeling negative. So, I am choosing to act considerably faster on ideas.

I think it is better to have acted fast and failed than to keep waiting for certainty. Regret is also a downer and a negative form of thinking and so, I am going to act even quicker than I used to.

Notice & grow in self-awareness

Having been an avid journal-er for as long as I can remember, I am pretty self-aware. Still, I went through a phase of trying to pretend my negative thoughts were not there. This form of denial can work for some thoughts but others are more persistent. They want you to notice them, honour them and then release them.

This year, I am going to do just that – Become even more meditative and untethered from these negative thoughts so I can see where they come from, honour the story that led me to feel that way, and then choose what I want to believe instead and release the old thought.

It may sound a little woo-woo but again, try it before you second-guess it (pun intended!).

Refuse to Take On Drama & Giving Up People-Pleasing

Some of my negative thinking comes from believing that someone, somewhere is talking/thinking about me in a negative way and so, when someone would look at me a little funny, I would immediately jump to the conclusion that they disliked me. That, of course, led me to think negative thoughts about myself.

This year, I am going to choose to think the best of every sideways look. I am creating a new habit of choosing to think they are thinking about how awesome I am and then I will choose to forget them.

What to Ask Your Pharmacist

With so many miracle drugs on the market these days, it’s rare to leave your doctor’s office without at least one prescription in hand. To safely use your medications to their full benefit, there are questions every patient should ask the pharmacist. Whereas your doctor may be limited to the time he can spend with you to thoroughly explain your medications, your pharmacist is trained to counsel you about the specifics of the prescribed drug during the course of your treatment.

All medications are dispensed with written information about the drug, and most of the printed information is easily understood. Occasionally, however, the medication your doctor has prescribed can cause certain conditions or side effects. To better understand your medication, you should ask for a consultation at the pharmacy, especially if you’ve been given multiple prescriptions for your medical condition.

What is it for?

The most obvious questions are what is the medication and why was it prescribed. Along with the uses of the medication, your pharmacist will be able to tell you about the conditions for which it is prescribed and whether the course of treatment will be temporary or long-term.

See Also: 8 Natural Supplements For Reducing Depression

How to take?

Another important point to go over with the pharmacist is how to use the medication. Your doctor has written out his directions for use, but it’s the pharmacist’s job to interpret it and instruct you in how much to take and when to take it. Most medications should be taken at regular intervals, and some at specific times of the day or night.

What are interactions?

asking pharamacist

Some medications react adversely with certain foods, or can cause dangerous interactions with other medications, both over-the-counter products and other prescriptions. Some combinations can worsen your condition, others can cause serious medical emergencies.

Your first step to safely using prescribed medicines should always be to tell your doctor what others you take and if you have any allergies. It is equally important to your treatment for your doctor to know of any other conditions you have even if you do not take medications for them. Your pharmacist should also be made aware of this information on your pharmacy profile.

What are side effects?

Almost every pharmaceutical drug has side effects. Some are minor, but others can be debilitating. Not all patients will be subject to every medication side effect, but every adverse effect that occurred during testing will be noted on the printed information the pharmacist gives you with your prescription. Routine side effects usually diminish after a day or so of treatment.

The most common side effects of any new medication are drowsiness, dizziness, rash, or itching. The pharmacist can advise what to look for and whether to stop taking the medication immediately and call the doctor to report more serious side effects that persist or worsen, such as slowed breathing, bruising or bleeding, or unusual fatigue.

What is proper storage?

prescription bottles

Certain medications need special handling or storage. Most prescription pills are dispensed in dark bottles or vials because continuous exposure to light will cause them to lose effectiveness. Medicines stored in bathrooms, where it is often damp or humid, can lose their potency. Ask the pharmacist about the best method of storing your particular medication.

Prescription medications can keep disease and illness under control only if we use them properly and know how to avoid medication mistakes. The role of the pharmacist is to help us do just that.
