Stephen Colbert pulls apart Trump’s strange interview with Piers Morgan

TwitterFacebook

Well, after a very, very weird three days, President Donald Trump has left the UK.

But Stephen Colbert had one more fish to fry on The Late Show Wednesday night, a rather strange interview with “chat show chumbucket and TV’s loudest pile of teeth” Piers Morgan.

After speaking about being on his “good behaviour” around the royal family and “non-stop” conversation with Queen, Trump told Morgan he’d spoken at length to Prince Charles, who the president referred to as being “into” climate change.

“He’s really ‘into’ climate change? It’s a global crisis, not kombucha,” said Colbert.

One thing we can say, you must wait for the hat Morgan gifted to the president.  Read more…

Trump gets rude welcome in UK thanks to giant crop circle

TwitterFacebook

A massive crop circle that will troll Trump as he flies over the United Kingdom isn’t the work of aliens, but it’s definitely sending a message.

The crop circle on Moat Farm in Stoke Mandeville says “блядь” in Russian, with “Trump” directly beneath it. The Russian word directly translates to “whore.” It’s also used as an exclamation, much like shit and damn. In this context, it probably translates to “Fuck Trump,” possibly a jab at the president’s chumminess toward Russian president Vladimir Putin. The circle is directly under Trump’s flight path from London to Chequers, where Trump will visit Prime Minister Theresa May on FridayRead more…

Relax, everyone. These pictures prove royals have taken selfies before.

TwitterFacebook

Everyone knows a life of royalty comes with certain sacrifices, but rest assured, taking selfies is likely not one of them.

*wipes sweat from brow and breathes sigh of relief*

A recent Twitter Moment titled, “Royals can’t take selfies says Meghan as she steps out with Harry” unnecessarily shook people up on a Friday. It focused on a tweet from The Mirror’s royals correspondent, which noted Meghan Markle told a fan she wasn’t “allowed” to take selfies at an event in Nottingham.

Meghan is learning the royal ropes already, telling one couple who asked for a selfie in Nottingham today: “We’re not allowed to do selfies.”

9 key predictions for how 'Game of Thrones' Season 7 will end

TwitterFacebook

Warning: Contains plenty of spoilers for Game of Thrones Season 7 so far, plus some inevitably wonky predictions for Sunday’s finale.

After many long months of waiting for Game of Thrones to come back on, I now have to contend with the horrible, horrible reality that it’s about to go away again.

Old Nan thinks she knows all about Winter, but we know what the Long Night really is: it’s those 10 sickeningly dragon-free months before Season 8 finally gets here.

But enough of all that. The fact is we still have one deliciously long episode still to go. So rather than waste time worrying about next Monday, let’s focus on those sweet, sweet predictions. Read more…

How the heart-stopping music for blockbuster film trailers gets made

TwitterFacebook

In terms of box office takings, a trailer can make or break a movie.

On the one hand, it could go viral. It could be like the IT teaser trailer. That one’s had almost 31 million YouTube views at the time of writing, and it even set a record for the most online views in a single day.

If the trailer misses the mark, though — if it’s a bit drab or, even worse, it gets panned — it could significantly damage the hype around a movie’s release.

One man who’s well aware of this is 26-year-old Frederick Lloyd. Under the name Ursine Vulpine, he has composed music that’s featured in a huge number of blockbuster trailers: everything from Mad Max: Fury Road to the recent Professor Marston & The Wonder Women: Read more…

Sweet mama rat leading her owner to her new baby is not what it seems

TwitterFacebook

While this video of a rat introducing her owner to her newborn baby rat looks sweet, there’s more to it than it seems.

In the clip above, a mother rat takes her owner’s hand in her little mouth and guides her to her new baby. The owner holds the rat in her hand as the mama rat hovers over it, almost like she’s saying, “Look what I made!”

While it might appear as though the mother rat is showing off her young, her behavior is more likely fueled by pragmatism, according to Animal Behaviorist and Senior Lecturer at the University of Southampton Dr. Anne McBride. Read more…

New Zealand lays claim to the 'British classic' that is mince toast

TwitterFacebook

The anger from Brits over mince toast was palpable.

Mince toast! How dare the Americans — specifically food website Eaterclaim the dish was a “quintessential British comfort classic.”

That was according to a video it posted on Monday, in which it visited London’s Quality Chop House. But many Brits said they’ve never eaten it.

British restaurant critic Jay Rayner, who once described upscale Paris restaurant Le Cinc as being decorated in shades of “fuck you,” weighed in on Twitter.

I tried to write a novel in a month and now I have a publishing offer

TwitterFacebook

Back in December 2015, I wrote a fairly waffling account of my attempt to write 50,000 words in 30 days for National Novel Writing Month.

You can read the whole thing here if you want, but the TL;DR version is this: I had very little sleep, drank far too much tea, and all-in-all felt like I had aged about 10 years in the process. But in the end I just about managed it.

After reaching the 50,000 word target, I had three main aims: 1) actually finish the book, 2) have a stab at getting it published, and 3) somehow become best friends with Stephen King and/or J.K. Rowling, who are pretty much my literary heroes and the subject of at least 80% of the articles I write for Mashable. Read more…

J.K. Rowling made a huge correction to this 'Daily Mail' headline

TwitterFacebook

Just after midnight on Monday morning, a man drove a van into a crowd of Muslim worshippers outside Finsbury Park Mosque in London.

Ten people are injured and one man is dead, the BBC reports, and counter-terrorism officers are in attendance.

For awhile after the attack happened, though, some news headlines weren’t mentioning the word “terrorism”. This didn’t go unnoticed.

This is not an accident, it’s not a collision, it’s not revenge. It’s terrorism. The media should be calling it as such#FinsburyPark

How binge listening to podcasts helped me get through my breakup

TwitterFacebook

On November 8, 2016, Donald Trump was elected to be my president. Two days later, my boyfriend broke up with me out of the blue and, to top it all off, the internet in my flat went out the same night.

Having recently moved from Los Angeles to London for university and to be in with my then boyfriend, I was suddenly very alone in a foreign country with a broken heart and no internet. I couldn’t watch the typical breakup films and TV shows that would have distracted me from the pain of abandonment.

In the silence of my flat, my mind would be pulled into thoughts about the deterioration of my relationship — how it happened, why I didn’t see it coming, what I might have done wrong. I tried to quiet my brain with Youtube videos of baby animals and Vine compilations, but as a student on a budget there were only so many data add-ons I could afford. To fill my need for constant sound I began bingeing on podcasts. Read more…

Dashcam footage shows dangerous driver getting a big dose of instant karma

TwitterFacebook

When you’re driving through winding country roads and you can’t see what’s up ahead, overtaking on a corner is never a very good idea.

The dashcam footage above was recorded by British YouTuber Kookoocachu last week. In the clip she’s heading along a country lane when another driver comes belting past, swerves round a tight bend, and comes dangerously close to flipping their car over.

It’s worth having the sound on just for the sweary scolding she gives the guy when she finally catches up with him. Read more…

Why Prince Harry and Prince William are truly the millennial royals

TwitterFacebook

For centuries, the British royal family has been watched, respected and revered from afar. The monarchy remained fiercely tight-lipped on all matters personal and private, and royal announcements were reserved for print newspapers.

But the digital realm now breaks down the barriers that have long stood between the royal family and the people. Through their social sharing, the younger royals are coming across as relatable, relevant and human to a millennial audience.

Over the past decade, the royal family has gradually stepped up its online presence, establishing large followings on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and Flickr. Read more…

Man returns home to overjoyed mom after biking around the world for 7 years

Timmis’ journey came to an emotional end Saturday when he arrived home in Derby, England, hopped off his bike, and jumped into a sweet embrace with his mom, who he hadn’t seen since 2014.

How teens are pranking your Facebook News Feeds with random events

TwitterFacebook

Seen any strange events popping up in your Facebook News Feed lately?

Maybe something very mundane, like a niche event at a school you’ve never heard of? Or perhaps something a bit more unusual, like worm-charming or mushroom-growing classes?

Well it’s not advertising, and it’s not an accident.

It’s actually part of what seems to be the latest Facebook trend among British teens: making random events pop up in their friends’ News Feeds by saying they’re going to attend, even when they’re obviously not.

One of the first examples of this was a “Year 10 Parents Evening” in Norwich which ended up going viral in a spectacular way. Read more…
