Fighting in Georgia's breakaway region of South Ossetia continues to cause death and widespread destruction and it is estimated that more than 150,000 people are in need of shelter, food and support.
SOS Children remains in Georgia and has been caring for refugee families in the Georgian capital of Tbilisi as well as families from the area of Kutaisi.
More than 65 refugees from South Ossetia have taken up residence in a secondary school in Tbilisi which is attended by many of the children from the SOS Children’s Village. SOS Children is providing the families with food, clothing and emotional support. Some 50 refugees are also being housed near to the SOS Children's Village in Kutaisi, around 200km west of Tbilisi. More refugees are expected to arrive over the coming week.
According to Russian officials, more than 30,000 people are reported to have fled the conflict zone and entered North Ossettia to shelter in more than 150 public buildings.
Yesterday, the children and mothers from Kutaisi were able to return to the SOS Children's Village and it is hoped life can return to normal as soon as possible.
