Report from Beirut from SOS Children

01/02/2008

Zeina Allouche, director of SOS Children in Lebanon, informed us about the worrying situation in Beirut.

Here is her personal description of what happened during the last week:

Friday, 25 January - just a few meters away from the national office a massive explosion took place leaving behind five deaths and around 40 injuries. Fortunately, all SOS co-workers and the SOS families were safe though a number of windows at the SOS Youth Home in Sin El Fil were broken.

This explosion is the second in 2008 while the first one took place on Monday, 21 January.

Today is Sunday, 27 January, this day is witnessing which looks like the start of a civil warÂ…My home is in the centre and the situation is getting really delicate and serious. Till now, two persons were killed in addition to a number of people injured.

It seems that several roads are blocked all over Lebanon as well. Our priority for the coming few days is to keep the children and SOS youngsters safe. Depending on the possible escalation, the plan would be moving everybody into the SOS Children's Villages that tend to be safer.

Relevant Countries: Lebanon.
