Ringling Bros. Circus is Closing After 146 years

Source: www.justjared.com – Saturday, January 14, 2017
“The Greatest Show on Earth” will permanently shut its doors after 146 years in business. “After much evaluation and deliberation, my family and I have made the difficult business decision that Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey will hold its final performances in May of this year,” Kenneth Feld , chairman and CEO of Feld Entertainment, announced on the Ringling Bros. website on Saturday (January 14). “Ringling Bros. ticket sales have been declining, but following the transition of the elephants off the road, we saw an even more dramatic drop,” he went on. “This, coupled with high operating costs, made the circus an unsustainable business for the company.” Feld Entertainment retired its performance elephants last year due to protests from animal rights activists. The U.S. Department of Agriculture has also fined the company $270,000 for reportedly violating the Animal Welfare Act, though the company denied any misconduct. The final Ringling Bros. performances will be held at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center in Providence, R.I., on May 7, and the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale, N.Y., on May 21. Click inside to see what else Kenneth had to say… “Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey has served as inspiration for all of the live entertainment produced at Feld Entertainment,” Kenneth added. “We learned from the circus, and applied those learnings to our other productions. Without Ringling Bros., we wouldn’t have the vibrant liv

Student caught with stun gun at NYC high school: police

Source: pix11.com – Monday, November 28, 2016
MANHATTAN — A high school student in Manhattan was caught with a stun gun as he returned to class Monday after the long holiday weekend, authorities said. The student, identified as a 17-year-old boy, walked through the metal detector at Martin Luther King Jr. Educational Campus, located near Lincoln Center, and set it off, police said. Martin Luther King Jr. Educational Campus at 122 Amsterdam Ave. in Manhattan (PIX11) A school safety officer searched the student and found a stun gun in his coat pocket. He allegedly told the officer he did not know he was carrying the weapon and did not know how it ended up in his coat, police said. The teen received a summons and faces a misdemeanor charge of possession of an unauthorized device on school grounds, NYPD said. It’s not clear if the student was allowed to go to class or was sent home. A spokeswoman for the city’s Department of Education said the campus has been deemed safe. About 500 students are enrolled at the high school. “Nothing is more important than the safety of students and staff,” she said in a statement to PIX11 News. “The NYPD immediately responded to the Martin Luther King Jr. campus in Manhattan and recovered the stun gun. Students and staff are safe, and we are providing the school with ongoing supports.” In 2002 , two students were shot at the high school in what, at the time, the New York Times described as “the latest in a series of chilling incidents that have p

The United States has elected Donald Trump, a 70-year-old tangerine Superfund site and a menace to the peace, stability, and dignity of the country and the future of the free world, as its Commander in Chief. His stunning upset victory came early Wednesday morning, when the Associated Press called the election , almost exactly a month after a leaked tape from 2005 revealed him bragging about grabbing women by the pussy. Hillary Clinton campaign sends supporters home without conceding defeat as Donald Trump surges in U.S. election

Source: news.nationalpost.com – Tuesday, November 08, 2016
Donald Trump inched within reach of the White House on Tuesday night, after wresting away crucial states from Hillary Clinton in what could spell a historic upset in the U.S. presidential election. He also stunningly carried Pennsylvania, breaking through a Democratic firewall in a state that had not backed a Republican for president since 1988. His victories left Clinton with a perilously narrow path and no margin for error in battleground states where votes were still being counted. As the race lurched well past midnight, Trump inched closer to the 270 Electoral College votes needed to win the White House. Trump stood at 266 to Clinton’s 218. By 2 a.m. ET, Democratic campaign chair John Podesta told the crowd at an election event that Clinton wouldn’t make a speech until later Wednesday morning. “Get some sleep,” he said. “It’s been a long night and it’s been a long campaign. But I could say, we can wait a little longer, can’t we? They’re still counting votes and every vote should count.” “She is not done yet…. We’ll have more to say. Let’s get those votes counted and let’s bring this home.” The uncertainty sent Dow Jones futures and Asian markets tumbling, reflecting investor alarm over what a Trump presidency might mean for the economy and global trade. As voting results streamed in, the website for Citizenship and Immigration Canada reportedly crashed — though it was unclear if the disruption was caused by a flood of America

House Speaker Paul Ryan Wins His Ninth Term In Congress

Source: uproxx.com – Tuesday, November 08, 2016
Getty Image Just after 9:30 p.m. EST, the AP called Paul Ryan’s race in Wisconsin’s 1st Congressional district, announcing that the incumbent Speaker of the House will return to Washington in January. Ryan successfully fended off Democrat Ryan Solen, Libertarian Jason Lebeck, and Spencer Zimmerman, an independent who was running under a “Trump Conservative” banner. Ryan’s next Congressional term will be his tenth; he’s represented his southeastern district without interruption since the 1998 midterm election. A lifelong public servant, Ryan has been a champion of conservative causes in Washington, gaining notoriety for his particularly extreme budget cut proposals. In 2012, Ryan was tapped by Mitt Romney to serve as the Vice Presidential candidate on the Republican ticket that was ultimately defeated by Barack Obama and Joe Biden. Last fall, Ryan was drafted by his fellow House Republicans to replace the resigning John Boehner as Speaker of the House. However, the speakership may be difficult for Ryan to retain . Despite being seen by many establishment Republicans as a future presidential candidate, he drew the ire of Trump supporters for waffling on his support for the nominee. (Trump even went so far as to tease an endorsement for Ryan’s opponent in his primary race.) After the Access Hollywood leaks this October, Ryan canceled a campaign event with Trump. (Via AP )

South Florida voters unlawfully denied ballots because of incorrect addresses

Source: thinkprogress.org – Tuesday, November 08, 2016
They are allowed to change their address at the polls. A poll worker watches a polling place in Miami. CREDIT: Kira Lerner Election Protection groups across Florida are reporting that voters in two counties are being turned away from the polls because the address on their ID does not match the address in the registration system — an issue that should not prevent anyone from casting a ballot. Under Florida law, voters should be offered a form to change their address in the event that they have moved since they registered to vote. But representatives with the the national Election Protection network and the SEIU both said that poll workers in Miami-Dade and Palm Beach counties were instead telling people they could not vote. “They’re legally required to be able to just fill out a form and vote, but instead they’re being turned away,” said Elizabeth Fernandez, communications director for SEIU Florida. “This is coming up again and again and again, so something is going on here.” Carolyn Thompson, a voter protection advocate for the Advancement Project, said that some voters were being offered provisional ballots, but others may have grown frustrated and left without voting. Thompson attributed the issue to poor poll worker training. “This is systemic. If Broward County can get their county workers to understand how to change a voter’s address… then so can Dade County,” she said. “This is not new,” she continued. “This is something we

At this point, as long as we don’t have to hear the words “ emails ,” “hombres,” “ nasty woman ” and “yuuuge,” we’ll be happy no matter who wins. (Just kidding, there’s a clear better choice here people. Make it.) Fox News Election Special (Fox, 8:00 p.m.) – Fox News is airing the same election coverage as everyone else, but the reason it’s getting its own slot on this list is because it starts an hour later than every other network’s coverage. With Republicans fighting to protect their Senate majority, Democrats are hoping for a “ wave ” election to come through down-ballot, even potentially yielding the House of Representatives. The most vulnerable Senate seats include Illinois, Wisconsin, Florida and New Hampshire, and while Democrats only have to worry about defending 10 seats, Republicans are in a bind to hold 24. As for congressional races, Democrats must flip 30 seats in the House to end the GOP’s historical majority , with the top five including Minnesota, Montana, Illinois, New York and California. Presidential Election Results 2016: Who Will Win?!

Source: www.thehollywoodgossip.com – Tuesday, November 08, 2016
November 8, 2016. A campaign that spanned the better part of two years all came down to Tuesday evening, with the 45th occupant of the Oval Office to be determined. Will Hillary Clinton eke this one out? Will Donald Trump pull off an upset? Soon enough, we will know who will be president come January. We’ve had months to digest what each candidate brings to the table, their strengths and flaws, in what has become a political bloodbath. You’ve had months to profess your not-actually-profound views on Facebook in hopes of influencing people who blocked you weeks ago. Now it’s time to get it done. Go exercise your civic duty. If you’re on the west coast and wondering where do I vote , there’s still time. Go make it happen. Then sit back and watch the results roll in as this insane roller coaster takes its final turn toward the finish line. Either way, history will be made in a presidential election like no other … and either way, the deluge of absurd ads will be over at least. Earlier this morning in Chappaqua, N.Y., Hillary Clinton became the first woman to cast a presidential vote for herself as a major party candidate. She’s all but certain to win the Empire State’s 29 Electoral Votes against Donald J. Trump, who also voted for himself today in Manhattan. While N.Y. State is not up for grabs, plenty of other states are, and national polls show a very tight race, with a modest Clinton advantage. Will it be enough to carry her ov

Indiana county government shut down by ransomware to pay up

Enlarge / The Madison County courthouse has been shut down since last week by ransomware. (credit: Nyttend) Madison County, Indiana, suffered a widespread ransomware attack that shut down virtually all county services last week. Over the weekend, the county government leadership decided to pay the ransom demands of the ring running the malware, which has not yet been identified publicly. “We’re following the directions of our insurance carrier,” Madison County Commissioner John Richwine told the Herald-Bulletin this morning. He did not reveal the amount of the ransom but said that it was not as much as residents might have thought it would be—and is being covered by the county’s cyber-insurance with Travelers, minus a deductible. While the ransomware did not apparently affect emergency services or voting systems, an Indiana State Police captain told a local television station that the rest of the county’s business had been knocked out. Courts and some county offices were closed, and employees were given the option of taking personal or vacation time in other offices where no work was possible. Alibaba's Huge E-Commerce Fest Has Changed the Game For Agencies in China

This week, as Alibaba hosts the world’s biggest online shopping event, some agency staffers will pull an all-nighter, working right through the 24-hour event. They’ll be operating brands’ online shops, adjusting promotions and reacting to competitors’ offers in real-time. Alibaba Group launched its one-day Nov. 11 e-commerce fest, called Double 11, 11.11 or Singles Day, back in 2009. Since then it has ballooned in proportion, with other online shopping players like JD.com joining in. Alibaba, which logged $14.3 billion in sales on its platforms last year during the 24-hour festival, is kicking off its event with a livestreamed variety show featuring singer Katy Perry, band OneRepublic and former Lakers’ star Kobe Bryant. It also had three weeks of marketing activities leading up to the event. As the event has grown, Double Eleven has deeply impacted the way some agencies do business in China. Memo shows Kim Jong Il suggested Bill Clinton should vacation in North Korea

Source: theweek.com – Thursday, October 27, 2016
A memo attached to a hacked email shows that in 2009, former President Bill Clinton was invited to go sightseeing in North Korea by then-ruler Kim Jong Il, and seemed open to the offer. Clinton was in North Korea to help with negotiations to free two American journalists, Laura Ling and Euna Lee, who had been arrested and jailed; he was successful, and the women were released. The memo was apparently written by David Straub, a Stanford University professor whose name was at the bottom of it, BuzzFeed reports , and it was attached to an email forwarded to John Podesta, Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman and Bill Clinton’s former White House chief of staff. It’s believed Podesta’s email was hacked by Russians. Kim, the father of current North Korean ruler Kim Jong Un, died in 2011. During his meeting with Clinton, he suggested the former president “tour someday when there were no problems in bilateral relations.” The memo states that Clinton shared he would like to visit a “beautiful seaside location” depicted in a painting at his guesthouse, and “Kim said he would show him a much more beautiful place, and that President Clinton should come back to the DPRK on holiday.” The pair also spoke about Clinton being forced to cancel a trip he planned to take to North Korea at the end of his second term because of last-minute peace talks between Israel and Palestine, and Kim noted Clinton was the first foreign leader to send his condolenc

Why the Elite hate Russia

Source: www.zerohedge.com – Thursday, October 27, 2016
In our previous article The Secret Truth about Russia Exposed, we elaborated on how Russia is a convenient enemy for politicians and specifically the Democratic party, to create an enemy that really , well – doesn’t exist to distract and confuse voters. But like with any ‘enemy’ if you bomb a village, you may have some pissed off villagers. As we explain in our best selling book Splitting Pennies – the world doesn’t work the way you see on TV – in fact, it works more closely as seen on Zero Hedge. Although Russia simply is just a country in the wrong place at the wrong time (which, throughout Russian history, seems to be a theme for them) – there really is a reason the Elite hate Russia. It’s not because they’re Xenophobic, although there’s that too – it’s because of several key factors that make Russia a unique power in the world, compared to similar countries. 1. Russia is an independent country. It’s not possible to manipulate Russia via external remote control, like it is most countries. The Elite don’t like that! Russia kicked out Soros “Open Society”: Russia has banned a pro-democracy charity founded by hedge fund billionaire George Soros, saying the organization posed a threat to both state security and the Russian constitution. In a statement released Monday morning, Russia’s General Prosecutor’s Office said two branches of Soros’ charity network — the Open Society Foundations (OSF) and the Open Society Institute

NEW YORK — Republican vice-presidential candidate Mike Pence’s campaign plane slid off a runway during a rainstorm at New York’s LaGuardia Airport late Thursday, tearing up concrete before coming to rest on a patch of grass. When the plane came to a stop, U.S. Secret Service agents rushed from the back of the plane to the front, where Pence was seated, to check on the candidate. He said he was fine, though, and no one had been injured. “We can see mud on the front windows,” a calm Pence said in the press cabin about a minute after the plane came to rest. Later, the Indiana governor tweeted: “So thankful everyone on our plane is safe. Grateful for our first responders & the concern & prayers of so many. Back on the trail tomorrow!” In Geneva, Ohio, GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump told his supporters that Pence had come “pretty close to grave, grave danger.” But, he added: “I just spoke to Mike Pence and he’s fine. Vice presidential candidate Mike Pence’s campaign plane slid off the runway after landing at LaGuardia Airport Thursday evening, NBC News reports. The governor was checked to make sure he was OK, according to an NBC campaign embed. Emergency crews were on site but all passengers on the plane were said to be OK, including Pence. The plane, which was coming from Fort Dodge, Iowa — about a three-hour flight from New York — made a rough impact when it landed. The pilot slammed on the brakes and travelers could smell burning rubber. Pence says mud splashed on the front windows of the cockpit. Passengers, including Pence, were being evacuated through the back of the plane. LaGuardia Airport’s automated weather broadcast says the airport is closed until further notice due to poor visibility amid the rain. Runway 22 had been in use for landings. Why Obama won’t listen to reason on Obamacare

Source: www.denverpost.com – Thursday, October 27, 2016
Chares Dharapak, The Associated Press President Barack Obama is applauded after signing the Affordable Care Act into law. By Ramesh Ponnuru, Bloomberg View One of President Obama’s cherished conceits is that disagreement with him can have no rational basis, and it was the theme of his most recent speech in defense of his health-care law. Only “ideology” and “politics” are keeping Republicans from working with him to expand Obamacare’s reach. He himself is, as always in his self-portraits, the picture of reasonableness, willing to accept Republicans’ ideas if only they would operate in good faith instead of holding “60-something repeal votes.” Obamacare has substantially increased the number of Americans who have health insurance, as the president boasted. Some of his other claims — notably, “This law has actually slowed down the pace of health care inflation” — are more dubious. But the core problem with his speech was not that he overestimated the merits of Obamacare (as much as I believe that he did). Nor was it the partisan silliness in which the president sometimes indulged. It’s that he refused to acknowledge that conservatives have reasonable disagreements with him about the direction of health-care policy. Obama believes that only comprehensive insurance policies are real insurance. Conservatives generally believe, by contrast, that people should be free to buy cheaper policies that protect them only from financial catastr

Trump believes the United States can get $1 trillion in new roads, for free

Source: www.denverpost.com – Thursday, October 27, 2016
By Jim Tankersley , The Washington Post Inside two weeks before Election Day, Donald Trump has finally released a plan to pump $1 trillion of new infrastructure spending into the U.S. economy. He says it won’t cost taxpayers a dime. Trump’s economic advisers have embraced a modified version of a theory some liberal economists have been pushing for years: that at a time of very low interest rates, increased federal spending on roads and bridges would actually pay for itself. The idea is straightforward enough. Trump would push Congress to authorize $137 billion in tax credits for construction companies looking to build new toll roads, toll bridges or any other sort of infrastructure project that has a revenue stream attached to it. (The revenue is critical, in that it generates a return to the private builder of the project.) Evan Vucci, AP Photo Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump speaks during a campaign rally, Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2016, in Tallahassee, Fla. The advisers behind the plan, Wilbur Ross and Peter Navarro, calculate that the tax credits would leverage $167 billion in investment by the companies that receive them, who would in turn borrow money on the private market to finance up to $1 trillion in total spending. That spending, then, would create jobs, with wages that would be taxed, and corporate profits, which also would be taxed. Ross and Navarro calculate the added tax revenue would be enough to pay for th

Shares of Chinese internet search giant Baidu ( BIDU ) slipped 2.5% Tuesday in a market rout in which the iShares China Large-Cap exchange-traded fund ( FXI ) tumbled 3%. Baidu announced two things this week. On Monday, the company said it would re-brand Baidu Cloud to “Baidu WangPan.” Citigroup analysts Alicia Yap and Solomon Chuen write: “This suggests that Baidu might be thinking of giving more focus and emphasis to its enterprise cloud initiative, which currently is known as “Baidu Open Cloud,” … in the coming months. The Baidu booth at a technology fair in Shanghai in April. AFP/Getty Images Baidu on Tuesday announced Melody, a medical conversational bot aided by artificial intelligence (AI), which helps doctors gather information for patients about medical conditions. It will be part of the Baidu Doctor app, which allows users to contact doctors, make appointments, and search for healthcare info. Citi’s take: “The healthcare industry is one of the key verticals that Baidu is focusing on. Baidu believes by combining the cloud computing, big data and AI technologies, Melody could provide a more comprehensive picture to doctors to make better diagnoses. … With its deep learning and natural language processing technologies, we believe Melody would become more intelligent when it has more data to collect and would be able to provide more AI-driven response/feedback to the doctors. We believe this new initiative is a good demonst

Crowd Chants ‘You Won!’ as Al Gore Recalls 2000 Recount at Florida Clinton Rally

Source: www.mediaite.com – Tuesday, October 11, 2016
Today’s Hillary Clinton rally in Miami had a bit of a nostalgia feeling to it, with Clinton and Al Gore together and the former veep recalling that infamous 2000 election (in Florida, no less). Gore informed the audience, “Your vote really, really counts a lot.” He recalled “what happened here in Florida” 16 years ago and there were some assorted murmurs and shouts. After he said “it was a very close election,” the crowd burst out into chants of, “You won! You won! You won!” (Clinton nodded as the chanting got underway.) Glenn Beck says electing Hillary Clinton is the 'moral, ethical choice'

Source: theweek.com – Tuesday, October 11, 2016
Conservative commentator Glenn Beck said that the election of Hillary Clinton is a “moral, ethical choice” for Republicans if it means keeping an “immoral man” out of the White House. “If the consequence of standing against [Donald] Trump and for principles is indeed the election of Hillary Clinton, so be it,” Beck wrote on Facebook . Beck has long been an outspoken critic of Trump, and is no fan of Clinton either: “Her tactics are blatant and juvenile,” he said. But “if she is elected, the world does not end.” Beck joins a large number of Republican leaders who have disavowed Trump after the release of lewd audio capturing the Republican nominee bragging about groping women.

Jay Feely announces on TNF that NFL will not change kickoff rules this season

Source: thecomeback.com – Thursday, September 22, 2016
In the midst of a New England Patriots blowout victory over the Houston Texans on Thursday Night Football, CBS dropped a bombshell in the middle of the broadcast. Jay Feely, who is CBS’ kicking expert (because apparently that’s a thing), said during the third quarter of Thursday’s broadcast that the NFL will not change the kickoff rule it implemented this season that moves touchbacks to the 25-yard line. The NFL was looking reduce kickoff returns with the touchback rule. Instead, it has actually increased the number of kickoff returns. Because of this increase, there were rumors that the NFL was going reevaluate the rule in the middle of the season . However, Feely contradicted that report and said he was told by Roger Goodell that the rule will last through the season. It seems strange changing rules in the middle of a season. However, this rule is probably worth looking at if we’re trying to reduce kickoff returns. The offseason seems like a perfect time to do that. WATCH: Three Minutes Of Race Baiting From CNN???s Paid ???Law Enforcement Analyst??? Harry Houck

Source: mediamatters.org – Thursday, September 22, 2016
On September 22, CNN???s law enforcement analyst Harry Houck attempted to defend the police shooting of Terence Crutcher, the unarmed black man who was killed in Tulsa, OK, after his car broke down on the road. Houck argued Crutcher was being uncooperative and might have been making a ???furtive move??? for a weapon in his car. Prior to that appearance, Houck accused critics of the shooting of ???playing [the] race card,??? describing outrage over Crutcher???s death as part of ???the war on police.??? Since being hired as CNN???s law enforcement analyst??in May 2015, Houck has used his national platform to defend police officers accused of violence and other misconduct by peddling racist tropes about black criminality, demonizing the Black Lives Matter movement, and blaming black victims of police violence. One month after the death of Freddie Gray — as cable news networks debated racial bias in the criminal justice system — CNN hired former New York Police Department Detective?? Harry Houck as a ???law enforcement analyst.??? During one of his first appearances on the network as a paid analyst, Houck specifically thanked anchor Anderson Cooper for helping get him the job, saying, ??? This man is responsible for this occurrence .??? Houck appeared on CNN 204 times between May 18, 2015, and August 1, 2016. And while he???s often invited to discuss crime stories like active shooter situations, Houck is best known for his absurd d

TV Club: Pitch aims to make the most of its big league debut

Source: www.avclub.com – Thursday, September 22, 2016
It’s hard to pinpoint where a show will go after only its first episode, but in the pilot, Pitch thrives on the power of archetypes. The scared but talented rookie. The gruff but fierce mentor. The seen-it-all coach. The cruel rival. There’s a reason that sports movies tend to follow certain plot beats, and it’s because they’re damn effective. And in the case of the premiere of Pitch , it turns out to be pretty helpful. A modern professional athlete has a lot of outside noise to contend with, and Ginny Baker (played with calm poise by Kylie Bunbury, also getting her major league debut, to some extent) has even more than usual. The premiere struggles, at times, to fit all of the different plot elements into one episode of television, and it’s perhaps not surprising that the strongest moments are when Ginny’s experiences skew …

Child predator Anthony Weiner donated to Clinton 2016 campaign

Source: www.fireandreamitchell.com – Thursday, September 22, 2016
Child predator (allegeded) Anthony Weiner donated to Clinton 2016 campaign. Of course, considering Bill Clinton the rapist moderated the wedding between Weiner and Hillary Clinton’s Muslim mole Huma Abedin, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. Child predator Anthony Weiner donated to Clinton 2016 campaign Under normal circumstances, a cnadidate would return the money donated by the Weiner child sexting fund. But of course, this is Hillary Clinton we are talking about. There is absolutely nothing ethical about the Clinton Crime Family. If anything, Weiner’s alleged sexting with a 15 year old is probably considered a badge of honor.

Dear Obama, How Does A 60% Increase In NYC Homelessness Constitute A Recovery?

Source: www.zerohedge.com – Thursday, September 22, 2016
Last week, we wrote a post entitled ” Harvard Crushes The “Obama Recovery” Farce With 9 Simple Charts ” in which we reviewed a report from Harvard Business School on the true health of the U.S. economy. Given the title, it’s probably not terribly surprising that Harvard was somewhat “underwhelmed” with the Obama recovery after taking a multi-decade look at various economic metrics like labor force participation rates, new business formation, productivity and real household income. Now, courtesy of data from the New York City Department of Homeless Services , we have a couple of additional charts to add to the list like the one below that shows a ~60% increase in the number of NYC families living in homeless shelters over the past five years. Aside from an increse during the “great recession”, the number of New York City families living in homeless shelter remained fairly constant at around 8,000 from July 2008 through July 2011. That said, over the following 5 years beginning in August 2011 through today, NYC has experienced a nearly 60% increase in the number of families living in homeless shelters to nearly 13,000. Ironically, the increase in homelessness experienced during the “great recession” was just a blip on the radar compared to the past five years as residential rental rates in NYC have soared. Alternatively, we offer up the following statistics from Mayor Bill De Blasio’s Fiscal 2016 ” Mayor’s Management Repor
