Israel Launches Major Strikes on Iran’s Capital: Is It Taking Out the Military Leadership? (Updated)

In the early hours of June 13 the Israeli Air Force launched a strike on the Iranian capital Tehran, following a steady rise in tensions between the two states. “Following the State of Israel’s preemptive strike against Iran, a missile and drone attack against the State of Israel and its civilian population is expected in the immediate future,” Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz stated regarding the strike. Katz has declared a special situation in Israel, stating that there was a high probability of Iranian retaliation. Israeli officials have stated that they are prepared for hostilities to last several days. Following reports of explosions in the capital, footage has shown dozens of impacts across Tehran, with residential buildings in flames in what are suspected to be precision strikes targeting military and political leaders and their families. Multiple reports indicate that the Iranian Chief of Staff Mohammad Bagheri has been assassinated. Confirmed targets so far included Imam Kohmeimi Airport, Mehrabad Airbase, Lavizan, Parchin, Pasdaran, and Nobonyad. Attacks on the Natanz nuclear facility, and on the city of Isfahan, have since been confirmed.

The attacks on Iran remain historically unprecedented. Although the United States has stated that it will not participate in an Israeli attack, it is likely to support Israeli air defence efforts against expected Iranian retaliatory strikes. At around 3:30am local time, Israeli media reports stated that Iranian and Yemeni missiles had been detected heading towards the country as part of this counterstrike. Iran’s ability to retaliate jointly with its regional strategic partners has been seriously hindered by the armed overthrow of the Syrian government by Israeli and Turkish backed insurgents in December 2024, which removed its large missiles arsenals as a potential challenge to Israeli security, and thus significantly reduced the risks from direct attacks on Iran.
