CORO.

  Rosas, claveles,
Psig ameno,
Luce con galas mil;
Divina aurora,
Su hermoso cielo
Viste de luz gentil;
Sus ojos son divinos,
Su frente el rosicler.
Sus labios purpurinos
El pecho hacen arder:
En t, dulce hermosura.
La mente segura va;
En t, rica ventura
El alma feliz tendr.

(RECITADO)

CNDIDO.

--Cun hermosa es la maana!
La aurora con sus albores
Va acariciando  las flores
Con que el prado se engalana.
El Psig! Os el murmullo
De las caas en su orilla?
Escuchis de la avecilla
El suave y variado arrullo?
Decidme: tanta belleza,
Tanto adorno y galanura,
Que con mgica hermosura
Ostenta Naturaleza;
Y esta tranquila corriente
Do las bancas se deslizan,
No os encantan? No os hechizan
Con su lenguaje elocuente?
No os dicen que su contento
Lo causa la Vrgen pa,
Viviendo en aqueste da
Con pomposo lucimiento?

TODOS.

--Sin duda!

PASCUAL.

--Tal alborozo
En el pueblo se respira;
Tal es el placer que inspira,
Que todos bailan de gozo.
Llenas encuentro doquier
De vistosos aparejos
Las calles; nios y viejos.
Todos salen para ver.

NIO I--Hablas, Pascual, muy de veras;
  Y lo creo! Pues la gente
  Anda colgando impaciente
  Gallardetes y banderas.

NIO 2--Aqu traigo un canastillo
  De flores para ofrecer
  A la Virgen ...

NIO 1--Ole! A ver!...
  Es un regalo sencillo ... (_Lo mira con desprecio_.)
  Yo tengo una jaula en casa
  Do moran pintadas aves,
  Cuyos trinos son tan suaves
  Que se la dar, si pasa.

NIO 3--Pajaritos! Qu locura!
  Yo tengo bombas, cohetes ... (_Con jactancia_.)

NIO 1--Quita all! Esos son juguetes
  Que slo infunden pavura!...

NIO 3--T tienes miedo!

NIO 1--Yo? No!

PASCUAL.--Tengo una flauta de caa ... (_Todos se ren_.)

TODOS.--Ja! Ja!

PASCUAL.
 --La cosa os extraa?
  Pues s! La tocar yo!
  Mi padre, como sabis,
  Me ense varias sonatas,
  Lindas, muy lindas, muy gratas:
  Las tocar; ya veris!

NIO 2--Mejores sern mis flores!

PASCUAL.--Mi flauta!

NIO 1--Qu tontera!
  Es mejor la jaula ma ...

NIO 3--C! Las bombas son mejores.

NIO 1--No, seor!

NIO 3--Que s, seor!

NIO 1--Vaya un tonto!

NIO 3--Vaya un loco!
  Tu pobre jaula es bien poco.

NIO 1--Tus bombas son lo peor.

CNDIDO.--Ea, amigos! No riais:
  Es cada ofrenda preciosa;
  Pero suplico una cosa,
  Y es ... que obedientes me oigis:
  Una banca adornaremos
  Con el ms bello atavo;
  Dentro de ella, aqueste ro
  Mansamente surcaremos;
  Banderas y gallardetes
  Pondremos de mil colores;
  Llevars todas tus flores;
  T, la jaula; t, cohetes;
  Este, con flauta sonora
  Ir entretanto tocando:
  As vamos navegando ...
  Hasta hallar  la Seora.
  Qu os parece?

TODOS.--Bien, muy bien!

NIO 3--Es idea singular!

NIO 1--Vamos la banca  buscar!

CNDIDO.--Eso lo digo tambin! (_Se dispone a salir._)
  Calla! Y Lenido? Do est?

PASCUAL.--Ah! Verdad! Adnde fu?

NIO 2--Dnde ha ido?

NIO 3--No lo s.

CNDIDO.--Pues bien, se le buscar:
  Nuestra banca dejaremos
  Para despus: es igual:
  Nos falta lo principal,
  Pues al jefe no tenemos.

NIO 1--Busqumosle.

CNDIDO.--Ahora mismo!
  Sin l nada se podr
  Hacer!...

NIO 3--Se registrar
  Hasta el fondo del abismo!

=CORO.=

Marchemos, marchemos,
Marchemos sin tardanza:
Felice nuestra holganza!
Mara colmar!

ESCENA SEGUNDA.

_Sale_ SATN _vestido de negro y rojo; su color es palido_.

SATN.--Ser verdad? Ser cierto
  Que el pueblo que me adoraba,
  Ahora de arribar acaba
  De la salvacin al puerto?
  Si navegante inexperto
  En el borrascoso mar
  Del vivir, qu singular
  Fuerza le ampara y escuda
  Que consigue con su ayuda
  Mis escollos evitar?
  Quin de la mansin sombra
  Do se hallaba sepultado,
  Poderoso le ha sacado
  A la clara luz del da?
  Ay! Para desgracia ma
  Fuiste sin duda, oh Mujer!
  Quien tuvo tanto poder
  De quitarme mi morada!
  Criatura privilegiada!
  Cundo te podr vencer?
  Maldicin! ... El mismo Averno
  Do se engendran los dolores,
  Las crueles penas y horrores,
  No iguala  mi tedio eterno.
  Ay! Por qu del gozo tierno
  Me priv la triste suerte?
  Por qu me neg el ms fuerte
  Que en mi terrible amargura
  Encontrase mi ventura
  En los brazos de la muerte?
  Espritu! Ser sublime!
  Ser msero y desgraciado,
   padecer condenado
  Por la mano que le oprime!
  Si el hombre en la tierra gime
  Y le molesta el vivir,
  Se consuela en el sufrir
  Viendo la vida tan breve,
  Mientras el ngel no se atreve
  A esperar que ha de morir!
  Ms ay! fuerza es que, sufrido
  Mi triste destino acate,
  Ya que en mi sin par combate
  Adversa suerte he tenido:
  Empero, aunque fu vencido,
  Sigo en mi senda fatal:
  l ama el bien; yo amo el mal ...
  Soberbio! ... Que haga su gusto;
  Yo, yo le estorbar; es justo;
  Que es mi enemigo mortal.
  Comience, pues, nuestra lidia!...
  Pensemos recuperar
  Antes mi imperio sin par
  Con la astucia  la perfidia.
  Suelo que me das envidia!
  Ay! ... Yo te recobrar!
  Oculto aqu esperar
          (_Se oculta detras de un rbol_.)
  A algn incauto cristiano:
  Quiero que caiga en mi mano
  la raza que tanto odi!

ESCENA TERCERA.

(_Sale_ LENIDO.)

LENIDO.--La orilla est solitaria;
  No se oye la gritera;
  Lo extrao: ya es claro el da
  Y no veo  nadie aqu.
  Debieron haber llegado,
  Pues as me prometieron ...
  Presumo que ya salieron ...
  Quin sabe si me perd?
  Ms no: este es el sendero
  Que  la poblacin conduce;
  Este es el ro que luce
  Su corriente sin igual ...
  All la iglesia ... Mi casa ...
  Las banderas ... Ya lo creo!
  Es el lugar del recreo
  Que  mi me dijo Pascual!
  Desde aqu esperaramos
  Que pase la Vrgen pura ...
  Ms ... quin mi me asegura
  Que no acaban de salir?
  Lo mejor ser buscarlos;
  Ir hcia abajo; no ... arriba ...
  Creo que la comitiva
  Ya no tardar en venir.

(_Se dispone a salir, y viene_ SATN _vestido de_ DIWATA_.)

ESCENA CUARTA.

LENIDO Y SATN.

SATN.--Detente! Adnde vas?

LENIDO.--Quin sois?

SATN.--Acaso
  No me conoces ya?

LENIDO.--No recuerdo vuestra faz,
  Ni me acuerdo haberos visto
  Alguna vez. Dadme paso!

SATN.--Nunca! Mrame bien ...

LENIDO.--Decid, os ruego, quien sois ...

SATN.--Yo soy aqul que, prepotente,
  Leyes d al huracn, al mar, al fuego;
  Venerado y temido;
  Dios absoluto de la indiana gente.

LENIDO.--Ments! De mis mayores
  El dios ya duerme en vergonzoso olvido,
  Y sus torpes altares,
  Do al eco de fatdicos loores
  Vctimas ofrecan  millares,
  Hoy yacen derribados:
  Y quien adora nuestra mente ruda.

SATN.--Insensato! No temes de mis iras
  El poder? Nio impo,
  Islas que bellas en un tiempo fueron;
  De fragante verdura;
  Sin trabajo brotaban
  De la piadosa tierra,
  Entonces pura,
  Las amarillas mieses;
  Vagaban por el prado
  El cabrito pintado,
  El ciervo algero y las gordas reses;
  La diligente abeja
  Su panal fabricaba mansamente,
  Y al hombre regalaba miel sabrosa:
  Retirada en su nido la corneja,
  No auguraba doliente
  Calamidad odiosa;
  Gozaba entonces este rico suelo
  De una edad tan dichosa,
  Que en sus delicias se igualaba al cielo;
  Y ahora, sin consuelo,
  Triste gime en poder de gente extraa,
  Y lentamenta muere
  En las impas manos de la Espaa!
  Empero, yo le librar, si quiere
  Doblegar su rodilla
  Ante mi culto, que esplendente brilla.
  Tan poderoso soy que abura mismo
  Te dar, si me adoras, cuanto ansas;

  A vuestra voz y vuestro podero,
  Por qu sus carabelas delicadas,
  Que ahora os escarnecen,
  No fueron anegadas
  Y bajo las olas sepultadas?
  Por qu vuestras estrellas
  En noche tenebroso les guiaron,
  Y los vientos sus velas empujaron
  Y no les lanzsteis vuestras centellas?
  Sois por eso tal vez omnipotente?
  Y para mayor desdicha, todava,
  El nombre de Mara,
  Nombre que encanta la infelice mente,
  Cual arrogante insulto,
  Vino destruir las huellas de tu culto!

SATN.--Las huellas de mi culto! Desdichado!
  No sabes que conservo
  Un pueblo que me adora prosternado?
  Ay! ...
  Tristes calamidades,
  Pestes, guerras y crueles invasiones
  De diversas naciones
  En venideras prximas edades!
  Tu pueblo regar con sangre y llanto
  Del patrio campo la sedienta arena;
  Que turbaron la paz y tu bonanza;
  Mientras yo, por venganza,
  Desatar los indomables vientos
  Para que en su carrera,
  Con ira y rabia fiera,
  Alboroten los varios elementos,
  Y la dbil piragua,
  Hundindose en el agua,
  Aumente sus horribles sufrimientos.
  Devastar en mi saa
  Los verdes campos de la mes pima,
  Y desde la alta cima
  De la erguida montaa
  Arrojar de lavas ro ardiente,
  Que envuelto en humo y devorante llama
  Asole poblaciones
  Cual furioso torrente
  Que, cuando se desparrama,
  Arranca los arbustos  montones;
  Y la tierra aterida,
  A mi voz conmovida
  Temblar con atroz sacudimiento,
  Y  cada movimiento
  El rico suelo amargar, y la vida.
  Ay! ay! Cunto quebranto!
  Cunto gemir intil! cunto llanto
  Oir entonces sin que sienta el pecho
  El duelo de la gente,
  Que con gozo insolente
  Reir los miro con mortal despecho!

LENIDO.--Mentira! Nada puedes!
  ngel,  genio impuro.
  Que seducirme quieres,
  Aparta el antifaz que desfigura
  Tu primitiva  infernal figura!

SATN.--Pues, bien! Hme ya aqu!
  Y advierte y nota
  Que soy Satn, el ngel que esplendente
                (_En traje de diablo_.)
  Se sentaba en un trono
  En poca remota;
  Rayos de luz lanzando de su frente.
  Yo soy aquel que con feroz encono
  Luch contra el tirano;
  Despus, vencido en mi fatal derrota
  Arrastr  vuestros padres  la muerte;
  Me vengar, y de t; yo soy el fuerte;
  Y si no quieres que mueras,
  Rndete  mis pies!

LENIDO.--Oh! Nunca!

SATN.--Ves mi poder y mi fuerza?
  Los espritus potentes
  Que en el universo reinan,
  Obedecen  mi voz:
  Sigue mi nclita bandera;
  yeme, pues: si humildoso
  Abjuras tu nueva secta,
  Y arrepentido  mis aras
  Con grato fervor te llegas,
  Yo te har feliz, dichoso,
  Tendrs cuanto apetezcas;
  El ro que tus pies corre.
  Que arrastra diamantes, perlas;
  El ambiente que respiras
  Do mil pajaritos vuelan;
  Esas plantas, esas flores,
  Esas casas, y esas huertas,
  Tuyas sern, si al instante
  De tu nueva f reniegas;
  Si el nombre ingrato aborreces
  De aquella cuya es la fiesta.
  Ms, ay de t! si obstinado
  Desobedecerme anhelas,
  Pues  tus pis ahora mismo
  Se abrir la inmunda tierra,
  sepultndote en su seno,
  Cual se sepulta en la arena
  La pequea gota de agua
  Cuando el sol las plantas seca.

LENIDO.--En vano infundir me quieres
  Torpe miedo con tu lengua;
  En vano, en vano pretendes
  Que yo  tu f me someta;
  Jams al nio cristiano
  El demonio amedrenta,
  Y ante el Hijo de Mara
  El Averno eterno tiembla,
  Espritu mentiroso!
  Ve, huye, ve  las tinieblas,
   la mansin del gemido.
  Y de la eterna vergenza!...

SATN.--Pues, bien! Ya que lo has querido,
  Es necesario que mueras:
  T sers la postrer vctima
  Que ante mis aras se quema:
  T pagars por los tuyos,
  En t me vengar mis afrentas.
  Espritus!

conocido profesor D. BLS ECHEGOYEN.

anteanoche.

     Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation. Royalty payments
     must be paid within 60 days following each date on which you

Foundation as set forth in Section 3 below.

1.F.

1.F.1. Project Gutenberg volunteers and employees expend considerable
effort to identify, do copyright research on, transcribe and proofread
public domain works in creating the Project Gutenberg-tm
collection. Despite these efforts, Project Gutenberg-tm electronic
works, and the medium on which they may be stored, may contain
"Defects," such as, but not limited to, incomplete, inaccurate or
corrupt data, transcription errors, a copyright or other intellectual
property infringement, a defective or damaged disk or other medium, a
computer virus, or computer codes that damage or cannot be read by
your equipment.

1.F.2. LIMITED WARRANTY, DISCLAIMER OF DAMAGES - Except for the "Right
of Replacement or Refund" described in paragraph 1.F.3, the Project
Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation, the owner of the Project
Gutenberg-tm trademark, and any other party distributing a Project
Gutenberg-tm electronic work under this agreement, disclaim all
liability to you for damages, costs and expenses, including legal
fees. YOU AGREE THAT YOU HAVE NO REMEDIES FOR NEGLIGENCE, STRICT
LIABILITY, BREACH OF WARRANTY OR BREACH OF CONTRACT EXCEPT THOSE
PROVIDED IN PARAGRAPH F3. YOU AGREE THAT THE FOUNDATION, THE
TRADEMARK OWNER, AND ANY DISTRIBUTOR UNDER THIS AGREEMENT WILL NOT BE
LIABLE TO YOU FOR ACTUAL, DIRECT, INDIRECT, CONSEQUENTIAL, PUNITIVE OR
INCIDENTAL DAMAGES EVEN IF YOU GIVE NOTICE OF THE POSSIBILITY OF SUCH
DAMAGE.

1.F.3. LIMITED RIGHT OF REPLACEMENT OR REFUND - If you discover a
defect in this electronic work within 90 days of receiving it, you can
receive a refund of the money (if any) you paid for it by sending a
written explanation to the person you received the work from. If you
received the work on a physical medium, you must return the medium with
your written explanation. The person or entity that provided you with
the defective work may elect to provide a replacement copy in lieu of a
refund. If you received the work electronically, the person or entity
providing it to you may choose to give you a second opportunity to
receive the work electronically in lieu of a refund. If the second copy
is also defective, you may demand a refund in writing without further
opportunities to fix the problem.

1.F.4. Except for the limited right of replacement or refund set forth
in paragraph 1.F.3, this work is provided to you 'AS-IS' WITH NO OTHER
WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO
WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTIBILITY OR FITNESS FOR ANY PURPOSE.

1.F.5. Some states do not allow disclaimers of certain implied
warranties or the exclusion or limitation of certain types of damages.
If any disclaimer or limitation set forth in this agreement violates the
law of the state applicable to this agreement, the agreement shall be
interpreted to make the maximum disclaimer or limitation permitted by
the applicable state law. The invalidity or unenforceability of any
provision of this agreement shall not void the remaining provisions.

1.F.6. INDEMNITY - You agree to indemnify and hold the Foundation, the
trademark owner, any agent or employee of the Foundation, anyone
providing copies of Project Gutenberg-tm electronic works in accordance
with this agreement, and any volunteers associated with the production,
promotion and distribution of Project Gutenberg-tm electronic works,
harmless from all liability, costs and expenses, including legal fees,
that arise directly or indirectly from any of the following which you do
or cause to occur: (a) distribution of this or any Project Gutenberg-tm
work, (b) alteration, modification, or additions or deletions to any
Project Gutenberg-tm work, and (c) any Defect you cause.

Section 2. Information about the Mission of Project Gutenberg-tm

Project Gutenberg-tm is synonymous with the free distribution of
electronic works in formats readable by the widest variety of computers
including obsolete, old, middle-aged and new computers. It exists
because of the efforts of hundreds of volunteers and donations from
people in all walks of life.

Volunteers and financial support to provide volunteers with the
assistance they need, is critical to reaching Project Gutenberg-tm's
goals and ensuring that the Project Gutenberg-tm collection will
remain freely available for generations to come. In 2001, the Project
Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation was created to provide a secure
and permanent future for Project Gutenberg-tm and future generations.
To learn more about the Project Gutenberg Literary Archive Foundation
and how your efforts and donations can help, see Sections 3 and 4
and the Foundation web page at http://www.pglaf.org.

Section 4. Information about Donations to the Project Gutenberg
Literary Archive Foundation

Project Gutenberg-tm depends upon and cannot survive without wide
spread public support and donations to carry out its mission of
increasing the number of public domain and licensed works that can be
freely distributed in machine readable form accessible by the widest
array of equipment including outdated equipment. Many small donations
($1 to $5,000) are particularly important to maintaining tax exempt
status with the IRS.

The Foundation is committed to complying with the laws regulating
charities and charitable donations in all 50 states of the United
States. Compliance requirements are not uniform and it takes a
considerable effort, much paperwork and many fees to meet and keep up
with these requirements. We do not solicit donations in locations
where we have not received written confirmation of compliance. To
SEND DONATIONS or determine the status of compliance for any
particular state visit http://pglaf.org

While we cannot and do not solicit contributions from states where we
have not met the solicitation requirements, we know of no prohibition
against accepting unsolicited donations from donors in such states who
approach us with offers to donate.

International donations are gratefully accepted, but we cannot make
any statements concerning tax treatment of donations received from
outside the United States. U.S. laws alone swamp our small staff.

Please check the Project Gutenberg Web pages for current donation
methods and addresses. Donations are accepted in a number of other
ways including including checks, online payments and credit card
donations. To donate, please visit: http://pglaf.org/donate

Section 5. General Information About Project Gutenberg-tm electronic
works.

Professor Michael S. Hart is the originator of the Project Gutenberg-tm
concept of a library of electronic works that could be freely shared
with anyone. For thirty years, he produced and distributed Project
Gutenberg-tm eBooks with only a loose network of volunteer support.

Project Gutenberg-tm eBooks are often created from several printed
editions, all of which are confirmed as Public Domain in the U.S.
unless a copyright notice is included. Thus, we do not necessarily
keep eBooks in compliance with any particular paper edition.
