Child Story
John, Ghana
When both of John’s parents died he went to live with his uncle. John was just three years old and was made to look after his uncle’s herd of 35 cows. He spent each and every day tending the cows, walking for miles to find grazing land. John was given barely enough food to survive and was never bought any clothes.
On Easter Sunday in 2005 a nun from a nearby convent noticed John standing naked in the street, extremely malnourished. He was now six years old but resembled a child half his age.
Sister Angela wanted John to be cared for by a loving family and to have the chance to play and go to school, so she contacted SOS Children. After visiting John’s uncle several times he finally agreed to let John go to the SOS Children’s Village.
John now lives in a family house with his seven SOS brothers and sisters and his SOS Mother Rose. She says “I am lucky to have such a kind, respectful child like John who cares so much for his older brothers and sisters”. John is gaining in strength and is now able to go to school, play with his friends and live in a happy and loving environment very different from his earlier years.
