Ghana
Ghana, formerly known as the Gold Coast, is on the coast of West Africa. It has the distinction of two firsts - the first country in africa where Europeans traded and the first black nation to become independent. Ghana has a relatively low level of HIV/AIDS - 3% of the adult population. Indications are that it is rising.
SOS Children, as part of its efforts to address the orphan crises created by HIV/AIDS, implemented a project in four communities in the Eastern and Greater Accra regions of Ghana. These communities included Somanya and Agomenya in Eastern region and Accra and Tema in the Greater Accra region .The project initially focused on children living with HIV-positive parents and AIDS orphans living with relatives. Initially 90 families from these communities were selected. Now the project has expanded into ten new communities.
