Alwaye-Cochin Sponsored Village update

Daisy Nojan, the Secretary at SOS Children’s Village Alwaye-Cochin, has recently written this update on the children:
181 children currently live at the Children’s Village, including 10 new children and two new born babies. They are adjusting well to life in the Village.
The Village is functioning well with 15 family houses, a dispensary, kindergarten, playground, library and community hall. The children from neighbourhood also use the kindergarten and playground. A new computer lab has just been built and it opened in July.
School and university
In the field of education our children showed remarkable results during the year. 10 children appeared for class XII examination, all of them passed with excellent results. There are 125 children attending different schools. 10 are attending university education. Another 13 girls are doing vocational course and 14 are working in different institution/companies. Sheena and Ivey successfully completed their course in masters degree in social work and commerce with computer application respectively.

Sports
Children participated actively in sports and obtained many prizes. Five of them secured individual championships at their school level competitions. Anjali, Grishma, Jeeshma and Mary Pricy are the award winners of drawing and painting contest held by YMCA. Libin, a very talented boy won “A” grade in Folk Dance competition held in all Kerala State level Youth festival. The sports talented children are getting regular training with the physical education instructor.
Development
To enhance the knowledge and skills of children a workshop on career guidance, personality development, computer guidance and spoken English class were organized. The high school level children attended two weeks “Science in Society” an experimental learning programme at Cochin University of Science and Technology.
Teenagers
The Youth Home for teenagers is functioning well. There are 58 boys in the home now. 27 boys are attending various schools. 8 of our older teenagers have got married over the last few years.
Supporting the surrounding communities
In our Family Strengthening programme initiatives, we are providing financial support to widows and their children. Under this scheme, we are supporting 304 children from the locality. These children are benefited in making use of our library, computer lab and playground. They are also getting awareness class on child rights, personality development HIV/AIDS, nutrition and personal hygiene.
