Update from Summer 2007
Dear Sponsors and friends,
I am pleased to write to you during the lovely summer season about the latest developments of the SOS Children’s Village in Amman. With your valuable contributions, SOS is a home for 104 children in the meantime who are living in a decent atmosphere in family houses nurtured by their SOS mothers. New children were admitted while others moved on to the Youth Houses to start the journey of character development and facing the challenges of life that will help them lead an independent life and survive in the future. Throughout the year, all the Village Children were engaged with various activities inside and outside the Village that aimed to cultivate their talents and add up on their knowledge from the outside environment. Those activities widely ranged from trainings, workshops, entertainments, sports and many more. During this summer season, the children will continue to enroll in centers and join clubs that target their potential and build on it.
SOS Children’s Village Association with the cooperation of the Jordanian Government, is still in the process of building its fourth Village towards the end of this year. Over the years, SOS led the way of all other local institutions and organisations that cared for orphaned and abandoned children by its best quality benefits and facilities that provides it’s Children with. Therefore, the Jordanian Government did its initiative by donating a land aiming to support the work of SOS to provide the proper care for needy children in all parts of the Kingdom. The Village will consist of 12 family houses, a social center that will serve members of the surrounding community, clinics for children and pregnant mothers as well as a nursery school for SOS children and the whole Jordan Valley area. SOS Jordan will continue to offer a helping hand to the less fortunate members of society, in the hopes of improving the quality of their lives and bringing out productive members for the future.
The children of SOS Village Amman had a full-schedule that consisted of various activities in the Village, at school and in the community. The Village was busy and all-coloured this year with the celebrations it held on New Years, Mothers’ Day, Easter, Independence day and SOS day. Special performances and dances were arranged for these occasions so the children would feel the joy and get theirselves involved. The cheerful atmosphere in the Village attracted children from the surrounding area to come in and take part in those festivities. Former SOS graduates also came to the Village to join in these celebrations with their SOS families, and a couple of marriages among the SOS Youth took place where the wedding parties were held at different fancy Hotels and the invitees consisted of SOS Brothers and Sisters along with the bride and the groom with friends from the outside community. The warm sun invites the children to stay outdoors to play football, basketball and on the swings. SOS mothers accompany their little children as they play in the Village playground while having chats with each other.
Moreover, all computers at the computer lab of the Village were upgraded and facilitated with fast ADSL internet with the help of one of our generous local donors; this will help the children broaden their horizon in their studies, researches or entertainment purposes. The SOS children as well as children from the surrounding community are all taking courses in order to improve their knowledge and ways of using computers and the internet in their daily life. What is also worth mentioning is that the SOS Children’s Village Amman has arranged for free computer courses for mothers and children from the surrounding community. This goes along with SOS’s efforts in constantly involving the outside local community with the Village and the SOS children and vice versa. Through such activities our children have developed new friendships with children from their neighborhood. They now get together to play in the afternoons and arrange for basketball and football games on weekends. The Village now, more than ever, has truly become an essential part of its surroundings.
In order to strengthen the Mother’s Role, SOS Children’s Village Amman held a refresher course in its Village. Interesting enough is that a number of SOS mothers from the three Villages, participated in these workshops. The discussion involved a number of issues that are of great concern to our mothers in order to improve their efficiency. Other activities took place during the workshop where the mothers spoke about the issues they face most in raising their children as well as their success stories. What made the workshop more interesting is that it also included lectures by educators from different social centers. The mothers have benefited greatly from these workshops that help them keep up the great job they are already doing with our children. Mothers from the community also attended these workshops according to SOS efforts in involving the community with its work.
It is summer time now and the children are back to doing all sorts of different outdoor activities while enjoying the lovely warm weather of Jordan. After a long school year that is finally over! It was a successful year to all of our children as they have passed their exams and are ready to move on to the next grade. Supportive after school lessons have been provided to the children in order to improve their academic level and achieve good results during this summer, and most of the children are looking forward to go to school and yet face more challenges and get to see their friends again. The children will enroll in different summer camps that promote their talents and skills organized by Mahara Association.
Once again, it is with your help that we are making a difference in the lives of our children. We thank you for your support and wish you a relaxing and joyful summer!
