Nepal's President visit SOS emergency releif programme
26/08/2008
Last week, SOS Children set up a basic medical centre for around 3,600 people who were in need of shelter, food, clothing and medicine following widespread flooding in eastern Nepal. However, due to increasing numbers of people in need, SOS Children has now launched a second emergency relief programme in Balaha, where 560 flood victims (250 of whom are children) are temporarily being housed at the Sarada Higher Secondary School.
SOS Children has, in agreement with the local authorities, pledged to provide full care for the homeless families. Food and medical care is being offered, and SOS Children staff are helping to put mattresses in all the classrooms and repair electricity supplies and sanitary facilities. A trauma centre has also been opened, which will help both children and adults come to terms with the tragedy.
