Child sponsorship update from Ziguinchor
Dear sponsors,
The Village has opened its doors since January 1998. The number of children and infrastructures has been growing up. We report in this document the evolution of the village and its contribution in the social development and the community.
- One hundred and twenty children (under 3 to 15 years) are living in the village shared out into twelve familial houses.
Since the shipwreck of “le Joola” in September 2002, the number of children hasn’t developed. Nevertheless, many orphans keep on entering the village. So, a thirteenth familial house is being built in order to satisfy the request for entrance.
- A primary school of twelve classrooms (500 pupils) with a restaurant for pupils, people are building. The school is going to open its doors in October 2007. Many children of the surrounding community don’t eat enough. This institution has felt, much enthusiasm, hope and of its lodging in the population.
- The family strengthening program starts this year. Two hundreds and forty needy children and families are the beneficiary of it. The population recognized to live in poverty; it’s the one living next to the village. This program is a real combat to fight poverty.
- The war has destroyed many things in the region, the economic activities have been seriously decreased and we have as drawback the impoverishment of the population and the increase of needy families.
- The presidential elections witch took place in February 25th, 2007, was war by the party which is an the state but contested by the opposition. They have been done in peace, transparency (state) and with massive cheat (the opposition). One thing is clear; it is only the bucket of the cooker which is heavy.
- The theatrical troupe of the village has stood out because of its performances during the ceremony of the Christmas from Senegal SOS children village headed by Mrs Viviane Wade, the first lady of the Republic of Senegal.
- The elders girls of the village integrated in a basket-ball school training, participate in each year in the mini basket festival of the region, a moment of sharing, an opportunity to make friends with other girls.
- We notice good school results every year here in the village.
In the college: during the first term examination: 30 out of 32 have succeeded.
In primary school: 67 out of 83 have also succeeded.
Children who find difficulties in their studies have been helped by a teacher, a schoolmaster or an educator of the village.
