Data source: The Polity IV project. http://www.cidcm.umd.edu/inscr/polity/ The y axis is the number of nations scoring 8 or higher on the combined Polity score. The years are all those available in the data, 1800-2003. Note that the Polity IV project only scores nations with greater than 500,000 total population.
