Stephen Colbert blasts Supreme Court justices behind potential Roe v. Wade overturn

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert

The U.S. is currently reeling over a leaked draft Supreme Court judgement which would overturn Roe v. Wade — the landmark 1973 ruling that protects the right to get an abortion. As Late Show host Stephen Colbert pointed out, it certainly wasn’t the historical throwback we had been expecting this week.

“I wanted to begin tonight’s show talking about the Met Gala,” said Colbert. “I want to talk about their theme of glamor and the Gilded Age. Instead I’ve gotta talk about another group of out of touch people in crazy outfits pretending like it’s 1895: The Supreme Court.”

In his monologue on Tuesday, Colbert blasted Justices Samuel Alito, Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh, and Amy Coney Barrett for their draft joint decision, noting that it directly opposed what they’d claimed to believe in during their Senate confirmation hearings.

“If these folks believe that Roe v. Wade was so egregiously decided, why didn’t they tell the senators that during their confirmation hearings?” said Colbert. “Well, because American voters support abortion in all or most cases at 80 percent. They knew that if they were honest they wouldn’t get the job, so they lied. Which I think is perjury, but what do I know? I’m no Supreme Court justice — I’m not a good enough liar.”
