This is a 16th-century engraving, with the inscription to right of the image "OLYMPE IOVIS SIMULACRUM" Possibly the engraving made by Philips Galle in 1572, from a drawing made by Maarten van Heemskerck.

Artistic representation of the Statue of Zeus in Olympia, actually quite inexact: according to Pausanias (V, 11, 1f), Zeus carried a statuette of Victory in his right hand and a sceptre with a bird sitting on it in the left hand.Four victories stood at each foot of the throne and two at the base of each foot. |
