During an Oct. 20 ceremony commemorating the 1944 landing and naval battle, Philippine president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Francis Ricciardone, and others, spoke of the sacrifices made by veterans and the closeness of the U.S.-Philippines relationship still today. Retired Adm. Ronald Hays, a former commander of U.S. Pacific Command, along with Rear Adm. Kevin Quinn, commander of Logistics Group Western Pacific, represented the U.S. Navy during the ceremony, which included a parade where crewmembers from the visiting USS Lake Erie (CG 70) marched.
