Summary

Description
English: Trinity College derives from King's Hall, refounded by Edward III in 1337 after his father’s original foundation in 1317. The arms of Edward and his sons who survived to maturity (plus William of Hatfield) can still be seen on the Great Gate of the college. The Latin inscriptions under the coats of arms are as follows:
  • Edmondus.D.Ebor – C.Cantabrvgie ( Edmund Duke of York – Earl of Cambridge)
  • Leoneilvs.D.Clarencie – C. de Vlster ( Lionel Duke of Clarence – Earl of Ulster)
  • Edvardvs.P.Wallie – Vo’ Black Prince ( Edward Prince of Wales – Called the Black Prince)
  • Edvardvs Tertius Fvndator – Avle Regis. MCCCXXXVII ( Edward III founder – of King’s Hall. 1337)
  • Gvilms De Hatfeld – Demortvvs Infans (William of Hatfield – Died an infant [hence no arms])
  • Iohes.D.Lancastrie – Vo’ Iohn of Gavnt. ( John Duke of Lancaster – Called John of Gaunt)
  • Tho’s D.Glovcestrie – C.Essexie ( Thomas Duke of Gloucester – Earl of Essex)
