October 26, 1945 Squadron Leader F. G. Birchall (second right), Missing Servicemen Section, Royal Australian Air Force, interrogating Sergeant Hosotani Naoji, Kempeitai (Japanese secret police), at Sandakan, North Borneo, with the assistance of Sergeant Mamo (right), a Nisei (Japanese American) member of the United States Army/Allied Translator and Interpreter Service, attached to the Australian 9th Division. Naoji confessed to shooting two Australian prisoners of war and five ethnic Chinese civilians.

Note: the Australian guard on the left is holding an Owen submachine gun.
