Summary

William Blake, Pity. 1795. Tate Gallery.

The work illustrates two similes in lines from Shakespeare's Macbeth (1:21–23):

And pity, like a naked new-born babe,
Striding the blast, or heaven's cherubim, hors'd
Upon the sightless couriers of the air.
