WOW School Links

There are many ways in which you can include SOS Children and WOW in your lessons. Here are a few ideas for the different subjects on the curriculum, which can either be expanded into one lesson each, or used in combination for a cross-curricular approach.

History:

Investigate the history of child labour in England and other countries.

English:

Creative writing/poetry/drama based on case studies or photos from SOS Children.

PE:

‘Walk to a Children’s Village’. Check how far it is to your chosen Children’s Village and do a sponsored walk with enough pupils to cover the same distance! Or if feeling energetic, run!

Arts & Crafts:

Look at art from different countries where SOS Children work, and try to mix or re-create this. Create a special WOW outfit for your WOW day, and focus on where the material needed is produced and the conditions there.

Music:

Explore music from the different countries where SOS Children works. Investigate the history of different types of music such as gospel/reggae/rap etc.

Geography:

Learn about the geography of a country where SOS Children works. Create an exiting journey through the countries you’d have to travel through to get to a Children’s Village of your choice by foot! Which different climates would you experience? Which types of nature?

Biology:

Look at what animals can be found near a Children’s Village of your choice. Which plants?

Languages:

Focus on a particular Children’s Village, and learn a few phrases of the language spoken there. Perhaps there is a pupil/parent at your school that knows this language and can help? If it’s a language the pupils know quite well, perhaps you’d like to write a letter to a child who lives there?

Maths:

Look at distances between different SOS Children’s Villages, and how far they are away from you. Which is closest? Which is furthest away?

Social Studies/Politics:

Investigate in which countries there are no SOS Children’s Villages. What might be the reason for this? Which international and national conflicts may be affecting the children’s villages? What does SOS Children do in situations of armed conflict? You can find news updates here on the website. What are the reasons behind children being orphaned in the countries where SOS Children works? What strategies are/can be used to prevent child abandonment?
